Businesses invited to take part in jobs fair

Organisers of a popular jobs fair are looking for businesses and organisations to take part in the next event this September.

The latest jobs fair is being held at Exeter Corn Exchange on 6 September and is being organised in partnership between Exeter City Council and Jobcentre Plus.

The last event in March was a big success, attracting more than 1,000 job seekers and 65 businesses. Some companies had success on the day filling their vacancies, such as Avon UK Beauty who recruited ten new representatives on the spot.

Cllr Rachel Sutton, Exeter City Council’s Lead Councillor for Economy, said the up-and-coming fair was a great opportunity for companies to recruit talented staff: “Past experience has shown that job seekers not only come from Exeter and around but also travel from much further afield, some making the journey from as far as Wales and the Midlands.

“In Exeter it’s always been difficult for businesses to find candidates because the city has such high employment but our job fairs are steadily making a name for themselves and this is borne out by how far people are prepared to travel to find employment.”

This year the organisers have changed the layout slightly so that there is more space to manoeuvre around the business stands. The opening hours of the fair have been changed too and it will be open from lunchtime until later in the evening to enable people to pop in after work. There will also be a ‘quiet period’ at 12.30pm before the fair officially opens; this half-hour is exclusively for job seekers with special needs to attend.

The fair runs from 1pm until 6pm and will include workshops on interview planning and CV writing, as well as support in completing online and paper job applications. Job seekers can just turn up throughout the event and there’s no need to book. There will be a wide range of opportunities from a variety of sectors and industries, with all levels of jobs to choose from, from entry level to managerial, unskilled and skilled.

Karen Palin, Employer Adviser Manager for Greater & South Devon at Jobcentre Plus, said: “It is fantastic to be working with Exeter City Council again on this joint venture. At the last jobs fair we were delighted about how many people received job offers as a result of attending the jobs fair.  This is a wonderful opportunity for employers to showcase their business and vacancies to people looking for work.  We look forward to welcoming employers and jobseekers alike.”

Companies or organisations wanting to attend, can register their interest with the organisers by emailing Exeter.jobsfair@exeter.gov.uk by 13 August 2018.
