Keep fit . . . and charge your mobile phone at the same time.

Pedal power has come to Exmouth as static outdoor dynamo bikes – which can generate enough power to charge up mobile phones - have been opened by Exmouth's Mayor Madeleine Chapman.

Exmouth Town Council, East Devon District Council and a local resident have worked together to bring the unique £30,000 exercise bicycles, complete with a shelter, to the town. Not only will the bikes help keep people fit, they will generate electricity, too, with small lights showing how much power your hard pedalling has produced....

The NFU also estimates that only around 10 per cent of dairy farmers are on contracts that track farmers’ cost of production....

Campaigners call for review of court charges

The Howard League for Penal Reform has called for an urgent review of the new criminal court charges system, after putting together a list of cases which it says prove the fees are ‘unrealistic and unfair’.

A teenager who stole sweets and ice cream worth £5, a woman found begging in a car park and a man who kicked a flower pot after being stabbed are among thousands of people who have been ordered to pay a controversial new charge which penalises the poor and encourages the innocent to plead guilty.

Since April, magistrates and judges have been told that they must impose a...
