Jack Bennett, a young person from East Devon District Council’s SWITCH club on the Millwey Rise Estate in Axminster, had his outstanding service to sport in the community rewarded by a place at the regional final of the prestigious Tpas awards 2017, which was held at a ceremony in London on 3 February.

Exeter BID Co is seeking applications from three people following the opening of three positions on its Board of Directors. These positions have become vacant due to business commitments and an office relocation leading to three existing BID Board members having to step-down from their posts.

Nominations are invited from BID levy players within Area 1 (representing Paris Street and Sidwell Street area), Area 3 (High Street North/West and Castle Street) and Area 6 (North Street, South Street, Mary Arches Street and Market Street area) to join the Board.

Exeter builders merchant helping libraries with materials giveaway

With libraries across the county being subjected to funding cuts, RGB Building Supplies is inviting them to apply for £1,000 worth of materials as part of its Well Built Community Fund.

The fund will enable the selected library or learning centre to make improvements they perhaps would not otherwise be able to do. RGB is calling for deserving organisations to get in touch, whatever the need.

East Devon stately home, Escot House is celebrating a special birthday this year as a venue for weddings, conferences and special events.

21 years ago, Escot held its first wedding for a couple whose parents had worked on the estate.

“We still know the bride and groom well,” explained Lucy Kennaway, who manages events and catering at the venue.

“Traditionally, many of our weddings were booked by people who had a connection with Escot when they were younger, but these days we are also getting lots of interest from couples from all over the world.”

Devon secures funding to create more nursery places

Devon County Council has successfully bid for capital funds from the Department for Education to create more nursery places for three and four year olds.

The funding enables local authorities to deliver additional places under the new extended entitlement by September 2017.

Entitled families who meet the criteria set by the Department for Education will be able to take 30 hours of funded provision a week during term time or they can stretch the entitlement across the year to fit with their working hours. New figures show that more than £2.1 million of National Lottery funding was awarded across Exeter last year alone. 59 National Lottery grants were given out in the city during 2016; providing a vital boost to arts, sports and heritage projects alongside community groups helping those most in need. A wide variety of local projects received National Lottery grants last year, including:

Checks on single person council tax discounts

People in Exeter who are receiving a single person’s discount on their council tax but shouldn’t be are being urged to let the City Council know about their change in circumstances.

Those who receive a 25 per cent reduction on their bill as single occupancy residents will soon be checked to make sure that the reductions are correct.

The checks form part of the Council’s measures to prevent and detect fraud and protect the public purse.
