Body found at beach confirmed as missing Exeter man

Police have confirmed the identity of a body that was found yesterday [Thursday 8 June] on Monmouth Beach in Lyme Regis.

The body has been identified as that of missing 53-year-old Paul Whatley from Exeter.

A police spokesman said: "The death is currently being treated as non-suspicious and a file for the coroner has been prepared.

"Paul’s next of kin have been informed and formal identification has been carried out."

Conservative Sir Hugo Swire has been re-elected as the MP for East Devon with a majority of just over 8,000 votes. He won the poll with 29,306 votes.

This is Sir Hugo’s fifth Parliamentary victory – he first became MP in June 2001, and was subsequently re-elected in May 2005, May 2010 and May 2015.

1.6 million people use election advice website

More than 1.6 million people have used a new election advice website to help them decide how to vote. 

University of Exeter graduate Matt Morley, 23, bought the domain name GE2017.com just seven minutes after the election was called.

He then created a quiz to help undecided voters choose between the political parties. 

The quiz has broken the previous UK record of 1.1 million users.

Ben Bradshaw consolidates his majority in Exeter

Exeter's Ben Bradshaw has consolidated his majority for Labour polling 34,346 votes in the General Election.

His nearest rival James Taghdissian received around half that number with 18,219.

Mr Bradshaw tweeted afterwards: "Thanks so much to all our wonderful @exeterlabour volunteers & the people of Exeter for an amazing result. 16,000 majority. 62% of the vote."

Topsham Library opens to the public

Topsham Library is now open to the public in its new temporary home.

The library has been temporarily relocated to the Nelson Close Community Centre whilst a new Community Hub, which will include a new library space, is built on the former library site by the Estuary League of Friends.

The Library won’t be able to offer WiFi or access to public PC’s initially, but these services should resume by the end of June.

Exeter City's grandstand seats go up for sale

EXETER City supporters will have the opportunity to own a historic piece of their beloved club when work starts this summer on a new grandstand at St James Park.

Around £3.5million worth of improvements are scheduled at the ground over the coming year. At the centre of this work will be the demolition of the Old Grandstand, which is sponsored by Stagecoach, and is the oldest structure at the ground, dating back to 1926.

The football club is working with Exeter City Council, which owns the stand, to give fans the opportunity to buy seats before it is demolished.

Flybe announces £6.7m loss

Exeter-based airline Flybe has announced a pre-tax loss of £6.7m.

Despite the fall, the company's new chief executive Christine Ourmiere-Widener, said the budget airline had started the new financial year well and will soon begin to cut capacity as leases on its existing aircraft end.

Plans to improve the A382 near Drumbridges have been approved by Devon County Council.

The Council’s Development Management Committee today (Wednesday 7 June) agreed proposals for an upgrade to the route to Newton Abbot which will improve journey times and safety.

The scheme will involve straightening the alignment of the road, widening the section from Trago Mills to White Hills Cross and developing a section of dual carriageway between Drumbridges and the Trago Mills Roundabout.
