Free places available for summer adventure

Free places on a unique four-week personal development course, including two 'residentials', are being offered by Devon charity Community Action South West.

Local 16 and 17 year olds in Exeter, East Devon and Torbay could sign-up for a life-enriching summer adventure with volunteering at its centre, giving valuable personal development skills under the National Citizen Service (NCS) programme.

Just 22 places are available.

NCS facilitates a combination of residential and community activities which, say organisers, will develop life-long skills.

Exeter students on top of the world

Exeter College is celebrating being top of the world again, with two of its International Baccalaureate students achieving top spots of an outstanding 44 points out of a possible 45 in the international qualification results.

The two were amongst the highly successful 37 students completing their two-year diploma this year who achieved average points of 34.2 out of a possible 45. Six of the elite group scored over 40 points with many gaining top marks in their individual subjects, with 30 top scores of grade 7, putting them in the top 10% worldwide.

Postcards give domestic abuse holiday warning

Special postcards are being given to holiday parks, local attractions, historic properties and tourist information centres across Teignbridge this summer as part of a domestic abuse awareness campaign.

The postcards show images associated with the summer bearing the message ‘Domestic abuse doesn’t take a holiday!’ on one side with information about the signs of domestic abuse and helpline numbers on the other side.

HSE announces new director for South West, Wales & Midlands

Samantha Peace has been appointed as the new Divisional Director for the Health and Safety Executive (HSE) in the, South West, Wales and Midlands.

She has taken over the top job after almost four years as Head of Operations for the East Midlands, replacing Rosi Edwards who retired last month.

Striker added to the City squad

Exeter City have completed the signing of striker Sam Parkin, subject to international clearance.

Devon and Cornwall magistrates urged to stop jailing women

Magistrates in Devon and Cornwall are almost twice as likely to send a woman to prison as courts in other parts of England and Wales, figures reveal today (9 July).

The Howard League for Penal Reform has released for the first time data which shows how sentencing rates for women vary from county to county.

The figures suggest that, while many magistrates’ courts are making good use of community sentences which help cut crime and turn women’s lives around, other benches are imposing prison terms unnecessarily in some cases.

Options for the future of East Devon District Council’s offices will next be debated on Wednesday 17 July at Cabinet. Subject to the outcome of this meeting it will be followed by a special face-to-face event with local stakeholders on 26 July.

The council is inviting representatives from around East Devon, to join councillors and senior officers for a special event where they’ll hear more about the council’s objectives for the project and can talk about any decisions made by the Cabinet.

How Cranbrook’s first play area will look

East Devon District Council are delighted to announce that the children of Cranbrook have now selected a preferred design for their £240,000 play space, the first in the new community.

The chosen design which includes, sensory play boards, an explorers Island with boat and barrel, animal rockers and a toddler play house was designed by Eibe, a specialist play equipment company.
