Solar slates for Grade-I-listed ‘green’ church

Latest technology brings Newton Abbot church into 21st Century and maintains its character.

When St Paul’s Church in Newton Abbott was looking for a solar PV solution to reduce its carbon emissions it wasn’t a simple challenge, as its Grade I listed status meant that any alterations had to fully maintain the character of the 19th century church.

The modern look of standard solar PV panels had already been turned down by planners, so when the church’s architects (LSN Architects) suggested solar slates, they approached Exeter-based SunGift Energy who designed a 4 kWp system...

Over 2,000 unannounced health and safety inspections this month

Over 2,000 building sites across the UK will be visited by Government health and safety inspectors this month.

Local inspectors from the Health and Safety Executive (HSE) - Britain’s national regulator for workplace safety - will be making unannounced visits to target poor safety standards in Devon, Cornwall and Dorset.

HSE inspectors will be checking high-risk activities such as working with harmful materials is managed properly and checking that the welfare facilities are adequate.

Baxter positive despite defeat

Rob Baxter is confident his Exeter Chiefs squad will have learnt plenty from their pre-season programme, despite ending it with a narrow home loss against Heineken Cup rivals Glasgow Warriors.

Devon and Cornwall Police has appointed Ken Lamont as Detective Superintendent, to head crime investigation (CID) across the whole of Devon. A former member of HM Royal Marines, he joined the Force in 1990 in Torbay. He has worked across all Force areas including Devon, Plymouth and Cornwall; holding positions of Detective Constable, Det. Record entry announced for charity swim

Organisers of the 8th Topsham-Turf swim are celebrating the annual event’s biggest number of participants, who are estimated to have raised over £8,000 so far with more sponsorship to be added over the coming weeks for a local charity.

The event, which has been staged by the Estuary League of Friends since 2005 and is now supported by Michelmores Solicitors, witnessed 133 swimmers start the mile long swim on Saturday 17 August at Topsham Ferryman’s Slipway on their way to the Turf Hotel.
