Members of Newton St Cyres Young Farmers Club have been busy in the last few weeks with a fun filled programme of events.  The members have listened to interesting talks from Tom Lee and Alice Giles (of Bow YFC) ,about their recent trip to Amsterdam with the Devon YFC Travel Programme. At the following meeting, Richard Gibson of BBC2 ‘Toughest Place to be a farmer’ gave an inspiring talk on his time in Kenya.

Tom Lee and Georgina Davie joined members from across the county at River Dart Country Park for the Devon YFC officer training weekend, where they took to the high ropes and other team building games, and learnt different ways to make a YF club successful.  Following this, the club took part in the South Zeal Carnival, despite the bad weather, the members had a brilliant time in their fancy dress to the theme of ‘Wild Things’, and pleased to take home some silverware and 1st place for their category.

Members spent an evening flower arranging to make table centre pieces for their Annual Dinner and Dance which was held at the Tiverton Best Western Hotel on Friday 1 November. Over 100 members, friends and advisory attended the evening, with guest speaker Andy Barnes from ‘Scrapheap Challenge’ who gave a very entertaining speech.  On the night, trophies were handed out to members which included Matt Cooke for the Speaking Cup, Tom Lee received the Cup for Most Consistent Member, Georgina Davie received the Advisory Cup for the most efficient girl, Jon Lee received the Advisory Cup for the most efficient boy, Steven Woodgate was runner up to the most efficient boy, and Tom Lee/Jon Lee received the Presidents Challenge Cup as voted for by the members. The draw from the Dinner and Dance raised £318, and the money will be donated to ‘Aid for Samburu’, the charity set up by Richard Gibson.

The members look forward to a very busy programme of events for the following two months, with Hatherleigh Carnival on 9th November, club fireworks night, a pub quiz, and county sports.  Other future events which are open to everyone to attend is Bingo at The Waie Inn on 12 December and a Carol Singing, Cake and Coffee Morning at Crediton St Boniface Church on Friday 20 December.
