On 24th November 1999 my stepmother gave my brother her General Power of Attorney giving him absolute power over all her finances. She did not receive separate legal advice. It was witnessed by one very elderly neighbour. On 3rd March 2000, only three months later, my stepmother gifted her luxury penthouse apartment to my brother "in consideration and recognition of financial debts incurred by my late husband". The only outstanding debt my father had when he died was to glaziers for £3422.16, which I paid.

None of this came to my attention until after my stepmother's death in 2007...

Adoption centre launches 'Santa Paws Appeal'

Exeter Axhayes Adoption Centre has launched an appeal for Christmas.

The centre has 200-plus cats and kittens in its care, all looking for new homes. Sadly this means that many cats and kittens have to spend Christmas and New Year in the centre.

This year the Adoption Centre has launch its Santa Paws Appeal.

The idea is a simple one. They are asking that people fill a box, similar in size to a Felix cat food box with cat toys, food, treats, possibly a Christmas card. Then wrap it up and donate it to the centre.

Boxes can be taken to the centre or dropped off...

Remembrance Concert

The Sheldon Singers will perform Howard Goodall's Eternal Light, followed, after an interval for refreshments, by a performance by the Taunton-based Collegium Singers of For the Fallen, a requiem written by Peter Leech, the MD of the Collegium Singers, and dedicated to 40 Commando Royal Marines.

No entrance fee will be charged at either venue but the audience will be encouraged to donate generously to the work of the Royal British Legion.

Members of Newton St Cyres Young Farmers Club have been busy in the last few weeks with a fun filled programme of events. The members have listened to interesting talks from Tom Lee and Alice Giles (of Bow YFC) ,about their recent trip to Amsterdam with the Devon YFC Travel Programme. Landmark Information Group, the UK’s leading provider of land and property search information, with a local office in Exeter, has appointed eight apprentices to join its 430-strong workforce.

Following an extensive interview and selection process, the apprentices will all be undertaking a 12-month Landmark apprenticeship programme designed to equip them with the skills necessary to progress in the industry. Fire crews called to Exeter H&M

H&M in Exeter was evacuated today after smoke was reported in the premises.

Three fire appliances from Danes Castle and Middlemoor, together with an aerial ladder platform from Danes Castle, attended the incident.

On arrival crews confirmed the shop had been evacuated and set to work investigating the source of the smoke.

The cause of the smoke was found to be a small door heater on the ground floor of the shop which was extinguished by isolating the power supply .

Crews cleared the smoke with a ventilation fan and used a short extension ladder to check...
