Warning after burglars take pensioners' savings

Police are investigating after two elderly women living in neighbouring Devon streets had cash savings stolen from their homes. An 88-year-old woman was alone at her home on Sunday around 4.30pm when she discovered a man wandering in the hallway. When challenged he asked her whether she wanted any of her windows cleaned and he left when she said no. She later found several hundred pounds missing from her purse in the bedroom. County launches project to tackle skin cancer

A major project to reduce the number of people in Devon affected by skin cancer has been launched.

Our county has some of the highest rates of skin cancer in the UK, with almost 3,000 new cases per year.

Malignant melanoma, the most serious form of skin cancer, is the second most common cancer in the 15 – 34 year old age range. Rates in all ages have more than quadrupled in the last 40 years.

However, up to 80% of skin cancers could be prevented through practising sun safety and avoiding sunburn.

Land train receives council support

In recognition of its potential to bring more visitors to the town, East Devon District Council has waived the rental for the first 12 months for the use and storage of the land train in The Maer car park, Exmouth.

Visitors using the land train will also benefit from reduced parking with a full day costing just £3, instead of the usual £6.

The Devon & Cornwall Police Partnership Community Volunteer Awards 2014 will reward and recognise those who give their time to support local neighbourhoods to build strong and cohesive communities.

Devon skin cancer alert

Skin cancer rates in the South West of England are twice the English average, according to new figures.

There were more than 800 new cases of melanoma diagnosed in Devon, Cornwall and Somerset in 2012, with more than 100 people dying from the disease.

The figures were released as part of a new campaign by Public Health England to raise awareness of skin cancer.

New regulations to protect consumers

New regulations have come in to force which will affect almost all contracts entered by consumers purchasing goods and services.

The regulations apply to contracts made on or after 13th June 2014. These regulations mean businesses may well need to make some significant changes to their paperwork and the way they deal with customers.
