Avian influenza: Prevention Zone declared across Great Britain

Following an increase in the number of detections of avian influenza (bird flu) in wild birds and on commercial premises, the Chief Veterinary Officers from England, Scotland and Wales have declared an Avian Influenza Prevention Zone (AIPZ) across Great Britain to mitigate the risk of the disease spreading amongst poultry and captive birds.

This means that from midday on Monday 17 October , it will be a legal requirement for all bird keepers in Great Britain to follow strict biosecurity measures to help protect their flocks from the threat of avian flu.

Adults in Devon have the chance to gain skills in the region’s fastest-growing sectors through the latest wave of Train4Tomorrow Skills Bootcamps.

Train4Tomorrow Skills Bootcamps , delivered by Devon County Council and Cornwall Council, offer a range of fully-funded digital and technical courses for anyone looking to move into a new career.

The 16 weeks of training offers free access to courses that would normally cost between £1,500 and £3,000.

Save the date - Thursday 1st December to Sunday 4th December 2022 for the Crediton Parish Church Christmas Tree Festival.

In the grand interior of the church will be more than 60 trees decorated by local schools, clubs, societies, charities and businesses.

The Christmas Tree Festival will be open between 11am and 6pm each day, except Saturday 3rd December 10am to 6pm.

Admission and Parking is FREE and there is Disabled Access.

Visitors to The Donkey Sanctuary in Sidmouth are in for a spooktacular treat this October with the Hide and Treat Halloween Hunt.

Hidden around the sanctuary are specially created Halloween crocheted character ‘Neddies’, which people can discover following the clues on their trail sheet.

This fangtastic activity combines family fun, exercise and brainpower. Trail sheets cost £5 each and includes a treat on completion.

NSPCC on the lookout for new volunteers

The NSPCC are searching the South West for volunteers to help keep children safe in the region.

The charity, which has two buildings in the South West, helps thousands of children a year with its Speak out Stay safe programme which is delivered in schools.

Speak out Stay safe helps children identify a trusted adult who they can speak to should they have any worries or concerns and teaches them how to contact Childline.

The programme also educates children on how to recognise different types of abuse, from neglect to sexual abuse.

Dawlish link road approved

A new link road will be built in Dawlish as part of a scheme for 860 homes.

Located between Elm Grove Road and the A379 Exeter Road, it forms part of Teignbridge District Council’s local plan to build the houses on the edge of Dawlish near Secmaton Lane.

As the local highway authority, Devon County Council’s ruling cabinet approved the project, estimated to cost £6.2 million, at a meeting on Wednesday [12 October].

Following the exciting news of the return of Exeter Carnival after 24 years, InExeter - the Business Improvement District behind the new carnival - are calling out for volunteer stewards to help at the event

The Exeter Carnival will take place on Saturday 26th November 2022 with the illuminated parade starting at 6pm. The carnival will travel through the city and will celebrate the community of Exeter. A leading housing association is set to build more than 2,000 affordable homes in Devon over the next five years as part of a £1billion investment in the regional economy.

As the largest housing provider in the South West, LiveWest has more than 15,000 homes in Devon and currently owns more than 39,000 homes across the South West.

LiveWest has stepped up its investment in the county over the past year after building 280 affordable homes made up of 98 for affordable rent, 67 for social rent and 115 for shared ownership.

Police safeguard 68 people in Devon & Cornwall in County Lines operation

As part of a national week of action targeting county lines drug dealing, officers safeguarded adults and children who were identified as vulnerable or at risk.

County lines refers to a crime where drugs gangs exploit children and vulnerable adults using them to courier drugs and money from the gang’s base to customers in towns across Devon and Cornwall. Sometimes the gangs are based locally and sometimes nationally. The gangs use mobile phone messaging and social media platforms to advertise drugs for sale.
