Bob the Builder visits Ladysmith Junior School

Children at Ladysmith Junior School in Exeter received a visit from Bob the Builder who talked to them about the build of their new school and the importance of site safety.

As part of the visit, pupils took part in a competition to have their art work displayed on hoarding around the construction site. BAM Construction Western is building a replacement school for the children. The existing buildings will be demolished and the area landscaped with environmentally friendly grounds when the new school is ready. Powderham’s fallow deer welcome new additions to the herd

In May, Powderham’s deer park welcomed 50,000 music revellers to enjoy Radio 1’s Big Weekend, a momentous occasion for the region.

Whilst things were starting to calm down a little in the deer park, it wasn’t for long with the deer recently welcoming new additions to the herd, following the birth of fawns over the past couple of weeks.

The Singha Premiership Rugby 7s Series makes its debut at Sandy Park this year, with the venue hosting Group B on Saturday 23 July.

The Group features the Exeter Chiefs, Bristol Rugby and Bath Rugby, and last year’s finalists Wasps.

Kick off for the first game will be 3.00pm, with six games of Rugby 7s scheduled during the afternoon.

The stadium will be open from 12.00pm, with plenty of entertainment throughout the day including live music following the rugby 7s.

One pet dumped every hour, RSPCA reveals

Every year the RSPCA is called out to rescue hundreds of animals across England and Wales after their owners abandon them and in many cases leave them for dead.

In 2015 2,751 animals were rescued by the animal welfare charity with a peak in admissions in July, 534 of those were in Devon.

Now the RSPCA is bracing itself for another summertime influx of dumped animals this year too.

It is thought one contributing factor of people dumping their animals in the summer months is down to some owners heading off on holiday and not finding anyone to look after their pet...

​​​​​​​​​​​​​​​​​​New figures on BBC Radio 1’s Big Weekend in Exeter and the benefits to the city and surrounding area have been released.

Earlier in the year the University of Exeter estimated that the Big Weekend would bring about £3.5 million of benefit to the local economy. Visit South Devon has said that tourism alone would have seen an uplift of around £1.7 million as a direct result of the event at the end of May.

Exeter hall announced as Community Fund finalist

Exminster Victory hall has been announced as a finalist in RGB Building Supplies’ Well-Built Community Fund.

It is now down to the public to vote, and the winner will receive £1000 worth of building materials.

The hall was opened in 1921 to commemorate the end of world war one, and winning the community fund would give Exminster hall the chance to fix the facility.

Exminster is currently up against Combe Martin based The Natural Approach Group and Whole Again Communities in Penzance.

Mid-Devon based garment distributor PenCarrie celebrated last month with a party to mark its 25th year in business.

Starting out on Marsh Barton Trading Estate in Exeter before moving to Sowton Industrial Estate and now based in Willand, PenCarrie is a truly local business, set up and still owned by Paul Persey and his family. The business is one of the largest trade suppliers to the garment decoration industry in the country and is a large employer in Devon.
