"Green|Blue" - the art of flood risk

Event Date:
28/05/2017 - 12:00pm to 04/06/2017 - 4:00pm
Venue:
Exeter Cathedral Chapter House

“Green|Blue” is a series of black & white images of 'trees'. The work is derived from Environment Agency data on land at risk of flooding from rivers and the sea, separating out 21 river catchments around the South coast from the Sussex Ouse to the Bristol Avon.

The view from above has become normalised. Google Maps and OS Maps, city centre plans and ‘you are here’ stickers on the boards at local nature reserves, give the impression of omniscience and omnipotence. The very notion of ‘flood risk’ calls both our knowledge and power into question in the face of uncertainty and the...

In March this year, Hospiscare was delighted to welcome the Men’s Walk 2017 `sell-out` crowd to Double Locks. The 650 men and boys walked eight miles in fine weather along the canal path to the Turf Hotel and back to enjoy a pint, a Chunk pasty and watch England beat Scotland to retain the Calcutta Cup – and they have raised an amazing £40,000 for Hospiscare!

One of the walkers, Jack Carter, said, ‘I walked in memory of my wife, Jan, who was looked after by Hospiscare, but I worried about raising sponsorship as I thought I had no one to ask. Then I jotted down the names of family,...

‘Good vibrations’ no longer needed for speakers as new research encourages graphene to talk

A pioneering new technique that encourages the wonder material graphene to “talk” could revolutionise the global audio and telecommunications industries.

Researchers from the University of Exeter have devised a ground-breaking method to use graphene to generate complex and controllable sound signals. In essence, it combines speaker, amplifier and graphic equaliser into a chip the size of a thumbnail.

Traditional speakers mechanically vibrate to produce sound, with a moving coil or membrane pushing the air around it back and forth. It is a bulky technology that has hardly...
