Putting down roots at the Devon County Show: 100 trees to be planted at Westpoint

Devon’s famous Lucombe Oak among 100 new trees to mark the Forestry Commission’s centenary year at the showground in May.

The Forestry Commission is providing100 new trees at Westpoint Showground, home of the Devon County Show, as part of its centenary year celebrations.

A commemorative Lucombe Oak, an evergreen hybrid discovered by Exeter nurseryman William Lucombe in the late 18th century, will be the centrepiece among the new trees being donated by the Forestry Commission. Hundreds of people attended Exeter Stands with Christchurch vigil

HUNDREDS of people, from Exeter and across the region gathered in Bedford Square, Exeter, on Monday, March 18, at an Exeter Stands with Christchurch vigil.

There were speeches, song and moments of silence to remember the 50 people killed in the recent terror attack during which two Mosques were entered. More than 50 people were also injured.

The attack took place during Friday Prayer on March 15.

The attacks began at the Al Noor Mosque in the suburb of Riccarton at 1.40pm and continued at the Linwood Islamic Centre in Christchurch, New Zealand, at about 1.55pm....

A public consultation has been launched on the City Council’s vision for Exeter to become the most active city in England.

The eight week consultation is an opportunity for everyone to give their views on the council’s priorities and principles for encouraging active lifestyles.

John Lewis shoppers in Exeter can hand a huge boost to a cause helping hundreds of suicide bereaved families across Devon.

Pete’s Dragons has been selected as a beneficiary of the Sidwell Street department store’s Community Matters scheme.

The initiative sees a trio of charities nominated to benefit from an overall fund of £3,000 every three months. Customers vote for their preferred cause by placing a green token into boxes located around the store.

Funding is then handed out proportionately based on how many votes each charity has received.

The picturesque estuary town of Topsham, just four miles from Exeter, will be celebrating the end of winter with Spring Forward Saturdayon the 30th March. Just before the clocks go forward to welcome warmer days the town will be buzzing with a fair-like atmosphere, with the majority of shops, cafés and restaurants taking part, and live music around the town.

The event is in its second year and is set to be a fabulous, vibrant day, full of offers from local businesses, Spring treats, children’s activities and foot-tapping sounds from talented local musicians.

RSPCA inspector takes on biggest challenge yet

An RSPCA inspector is set to trek to Everest Base Camp to raise funds for animals in need.

Marije Zwager, an inspector based in Exeter, will be taking part in the trek this September with a group of like-minded animal lovers to raise much-needed funds for the RSPCA.

Everyday Marije experiences first-hand the cruelty that is inflicted on innocent animals and the work the RSPCA does to prevent this. She says this is why she is pushing herself to the limit to raise funds to help even more animals.

Education and inspiration after Beach Guardian team visit Exeter law firm

An Exeter law firm has taken another step in the battle against plastic pollution by working with one of the South West’s brightest community interest companies, Beach Guardian.

Stephens Scown LLP signed up to the Plastic Free Exeter pledge in late 2018 and has been taking action to cut down on its plastic use since then. This has included arranging a plastic collection along Exeter’s Quay, collecting all the plastic used in one week to assess where it comes from and looking at ways to reduce this as part of the firm’s ‘Giving Back’ program.
