Sidmouth Recycling Centre one of top 4 in the country

Devon's latest recycling centre in Sidmouth has made it into the finals in a prestigious national competition.

The site was announced as a 'runner up' in the Civic Amenity Site of the Year category in this years Awards for Excellence in Recycling and Waste Management organised by letsrecycle.com, making it one of the best in the UK.

The awards, now in their eleventh year, are renowned for showcasing innovation, dedication and success in recycling and sustainable waste management and were marked by an event at the Landmark Hotel in London on 1 May.

Deafinite Interpreters sign DCC contract

An Exeter-based agency of British Sign Language interpreters has been awarded the contract by Devon County Council to be its preferred supplier of interpreters.

According to recent research the Deaf community is suffering as a result of lack of access to BSL interpreters, with many suffering health issues due to reasons such as a lack of information, poor communication, and unnecessary difficulties in getting to the doctor in the first place. A short film by a University of Exeter film student has been selected to be showcased as part of Directors’ Fortnight at the Cannes Film Festival. Aygul Bakanova’s film the‘Void’, includes famous actors and is the product of collaboration with the Danish director Milad Alami. The film takes place on a ferry from Køge to Bornholm, a Danish island in the Baltic Sea. It features a star-studded cast including Lars Mikkelsen of The Killing, Borgen and Sherlock fame, and Game of Thrones actor Dar Salim. Devon to write off £1m Exeter Airport debt

Devon County Council will have to write off more than £1m outstanding from the Exeter Airport sale, Council leader John Hart has said today. Having only received £185 from the £1,049,000 outstanding from sale of Exeter Airport cocunillors at the cocunil’s cabinet earlier today councillors said that they were unlikely to ever recover the The money was lost when Regional and City Airports (RCAL), the company that bought the stake, went into liquidation after defaulting on interest payments. Exeter coach crash driver bailed

An Exeter man has been arrested on suspicion of causing death by dangerous driving after a a coach hit a wall in Cornwall killing two female passengers. Emergency crews were called to the scene at around 1pm on Tuesday (13 May). The coach had been travelling on the A387 from the Plymouth direction towards Looe between Sandplace and Widegates when the incident occurred. It was operated by Carmel and police believe it was being used for a trip organised by Age Concern from Exmouth.

Campaign to cut city centre begging

A new campaign designed to discourage people from giving money to those who beg has been launched in Exeter.

The campaign sees Stencilled messages sprayed onto the pavement at key spots in Exeter city centre in an attempt to stop aggressive and intimidating begging by highlighting organisations which offer support to rough sleepers.

City centre Police say that they currently receive around 6 public reports of begging offences each day but believe that this only represents a portion of the total.
