1,600 entries in 3 weeks for Great West Run

Organisers of Exeter’s Great West Run, sponsored by Tozers, are delighted to announce that the 2014 event has already attracted over 1,600 sign ups in just three weeks of entries being officially opened.

Last year, a total of 2,123 runners took to the streets of Exeter to complete the 13.1 mile challenge. With 1,600 already registered for 2014, the surge of runners taking advantage of the early bird savings would suggest that this years entries will substantially surpass those of recent years.

Right now, there are students in the assembly hall where you once sat, facing similar challenges and opportunities that you did. Being connected to you could really help them.

MORE than 175 apprenticeships are waiting to be snapped up by youngsters looking to start work after their exams this summer, it has been revealed.

School-leavers in Devon and Cornwall are being urged to avoid the post-exam rush and think now about securing an apprenticeship in their chosen career, and not wait until September.

Mark Boulting, managing director of Plymouth-based Skills Group, said: “Learners are in the driving seat right now. We have around 175 vacancies, it is the most we ever have had.”

Man arrested for alleged arson attack

A 25-year-old man from Ilfracombe has been arrested after an alleged arson attack at a rural petrol station.

The alleged attack took place at Fishleigh Rock Service Station, Umberleigh, north Devon, in the early hours of Monday 21 April.

Police enquiries are continuing.

Exeter’s Royal Albert Memorial Museum (RAMM) is calling for entries for the 2014 Local Art Show competition.

Run jointly by RAMM and the Express and Echo, all art groups and societies from Exeter and the surrounding area can compete for the chance to exhibit the work of their members in the museum from 7 to 21 August. #

Exeter legal firm sees income soar

An award winning South West law firm has seen its income grow by 12%.

Stephens Scown LLP, which is based in Exeter, has increased its income to £13.5 million – a growth of 12% – in the year ended 30 April 2014. This growth doubles the rise of 6% seen in the previous financial year and will enable the firm to pay out, on average, a firm-wide bonus in excess of 3% to all eligible employees.

Since 2011, the firm’s turnover has grown by 29%, representing strong organic, self-funded growth in Devon and Cornwall.

The University of Exeter is in the top ten of 123 UK universities for 2015 in the influential Complete University Guide, published yesterday (Monday 12 May). Exeter reinforced its position at 10th and increased its scores in the majority of measures. Carsharedevon.com is nearing 11,000 members following the latest drive to get more motorists to join the scheme.

More than 450 people signed up to the UK’s most successful car sharing scheme between January and March this year, bringing the scheme membership to just over 10,900.
