South West Blog Social goes down a storm

Last Saturday (7th June) saw a whole host of bloggers descended on Exeter to take part in the South West Blog Social. The event, run by local bloggers Jodie Dewberry (@alajode) and Albertine Brandon (@dippywrites) brought together over 50 bloggers for a day of fun and girly pampering at Oddfellows Bar, New North Road.

Police fund new CCTV cameras in Tiverton

Devon and Cornwall Police has donated £2,500 to Mid Devon District Council in an initiative that will see an upgrade to Tiverton town’s CCTV system.

There are currently sixteen CCTV cameras plotted around the town centre and it is hoped that this will be increased by a further two. Images from each camera are sent via a fibre optic cable to the CCTV operating room and recorded on a digital video recorder which can be used in criminal investigations. It seems that every month there is a report on a company being hacked and personal data being put at risk.

Recently eBay hit the headlines as one of the latest victims of cybercrime and as a result, has asked all of its customers to reset their passwords. Now, an Exeter-based seminar hosted by Michelmores Solicitors is going to discuss the risk of cyber crime for internet users, and potential liability associated with data storage.

Developer doubles sharers' accommodation

Exeter’s largest and most exclusive luxury student accommodation development, Dean Clarke Lofts, is doubling the amount of sharers’ accommodation available in a bid to meet demand from students looking to live in the lofts during the 2014-15 academic year.

Arrests after alleged attempted burglary

Police are investigating an attempted burglary at a commercial premises in Exeter on Monday 9 June.

Four men were spotted on CCTV allegedly attempting to break into the premises in Yeoford Way, Marsh Barton at around 2.40am

The men allegedly climbed the security gate and attempted to break into a shipping container at the rear of the premises.

Job prospects in the South West are the best in the country, with an employment outlook of +15% this quarter, according to Manpower, the global leader in contingent and permanent recruitment workforce solutions. This is a significant increase on last quarter’s Outlook of +10%, and the highest in the region for over three years.

Send your old glasses overseas with specsavers

An Exeter opticians is hosting a collection drive for old and unused glasses in aid of Vision Aid Overseas (VAO) throughout June. Specsavers, located at 247 Highstreet, is asking locals to search high and low for old pairs of specs, as staff aim to collect a record number of glasses for the UK-based charity. Jewellery worth £5,000 stolen in burglary

Police in north Devon are appealing for information after £5,000 worth of jewellery was stolen during a burglary at an elderly woman’s South Molton home.

The woman in her 80s, discovered her house had been burgled after returning from a holiday visiting family in Australia.

More than 20 items (pictured), including a wedding ring and eternity ring, were taken from the house in North Road sometime between the early hours of Sunday 30 March and 7pm on Sunday 1 June.

Students from University of Exeter are taking part in a day of action today in order to protest against controversial cuts they believe could “disproportionally impact” students with disabilities.
