Children prove they are real jet setters

Year 4 students from South Tawton School in South Zeal got to experience what it feels like to fly a Boeing 737-800 aircraft during a fun-filled morning at the newly launched Virtual Jet Centre located at the Xpressway Business Park in Chudleigh, just outside Exeter.

The Virtual Jet Centre offers ‘Fear of Flying’ courses, family experience days and pilot and cabin crew training from its state-of-the-art centre, which opened its doors in May, 2014.

Exeter Eagles soar to new heights

Exeter Eagles BMX club celebrated the completion of works to develop their track and facilities at a special evening event.

Funding for the new facilities has been provided by the Coastal Recycling Community Fund and has involved improvements to the track and the completion of a new toilet block and development of the club and catering room.

The track is now a centre of excellence with riders coming from all over the South West to compete and practice. The sport has become even more popular since the London Olympics and the Eagles Junior section is booming.

New Life Radio 106.2 FM and Online launches at midnight on Friday (25 July) and will be broadcasting 24/7 for two weeks.

A Christian radio station with a message for today, the station will feature music, stories, drama, interviews - something for all ages.

The Day We Played Brazil has been wowing audiences at the Exeter Northcott Theatre since it opened on Wednesday 16 July and a group of audience members in particular on Saturday evening’s performance had a very special reason to see the show.

The musical celebrates the 100th anniversary of Exeter City becoming the first team to ever play Brazil and follows the stories of the 1914 footballers who went on the South American tour. Billy Smith and Bill Lovett were two of the footballers who played in the historic tour and members of both of their families travelled down from the north...

Hooker Elvis Taione hopes a big year with new club Exeter Chiefs in the Aviva Premiership can help secure him a spot in the Tongan squad for next year's Rugby World Cup.

Exeter Chiefs star Kai Horstmann was on hand to proudly hand over the keys to the new FORCE Cancer Charity van, which has been partly funded by the Exeter Foundation.

Set up in 2010 by some of Exeter’s top names in business and sport, the Foundation not only helps to raise vital funds for worthwhile local charities, but it also supports key projects across the region through money raised not only at Chiefs' match-days, but at various fundraising events throughout the course of the year.

Join a charity cycle ride along the Exe Estuary this weekend to help the cancer charities which supported an Exeter family through their mother’s illness.

Bridget Johns, who lived at Ebford, sadly lost her battle to cancer earlier this year and despite great sadness, her family has organised a charity cycle ride and barbecue on Sunday 20 July 20 to raise money for local charity, Hospiscare, Cancer Research UK and Marie Cure Cancer Care.

Tony Rowe bestowed with honorary degree

The University of Exeter is bestowing key figures from the South West region with Honorary Degrees this week, among 14 Honorary Graduates.

Kicking off proceedings was Tony Rowe OBE, Chief Executive and Chairman of Exeter Chiefs Rugby Club and also South West Communications Group, which he established in 1982.

He was joined on Monday 14 July by Roy Pike who led Torquay Boys’ Grammar School for 27 years, making him one of the longest-serving head teachers. He is an alumnus of the University of Exeter and three of his six children also graduated from the University.

Decade of charity golf days raises £109,000

Hospiscare is celebrating after raising £109,000 during a decade of the hugely popular Charity Golf Tournament held in Exeter.

A total of 46 teams, mainly from Exeter but also from all over the country, played in glorious sunshine at the Exeter Golf and Country Club. There was plenty of light hearted rivalry and banter as they competed for the Marnie Burgoynes Memorial Trophy which was won by the Misfits, led by Nigel Armstrong

The next generation: Children and the dentist

Figures, released in The Sunday Times this weekend, show that the number one reason for primary-school-aged children being admitted to hospital is to have multiple teeth taken out.

Provisional figures for the period 2013-14 show that 25,812 children from that age group have been admitted to hospital to have multiple tooth extractions, up from 22,574 three years previously.

Kathryn Harley, former dean of the faculty of dental surgery at the Royal College of Surgeons, said: "We have children who require all 20 of their baby teeth to be extracted. It beggars belief that...
