TEDxExeter talks go live online

Prepare to be moved, inspired, challenged and amused as talks from this year’s TEDxExeter conference go live online today for anyone to enjoy. Viewing figures from past talks indicate that they have the potential to be watched by millions of people in hundreds of countries around the world.

Thunderstorms and rain warning for Devon

A severe weather warning for heavy rain has been issued for Devon on Friday.

Forecasters say isolated severe thunderstorms are likely to develop on Friday, which will be succeeded by a band of more widespread heavy rain and occasional thunderstorms, affecting much of the region into the early hours of Saturday morning.

The public should be aware that there is a chance of some very localised significant disruption, mainly from surface water flooding. Lightning and hail could also cause some impacts.

Work starts on The Stop Line Way

Work on the latest phase of the Stop Line Way walking and cycling route has started this week (Monday 8 June).

The one kilometre section which will be developed by Devon County Council over the next 16 weeks, will provide an off-road connection from the cemetery, near Marsh Lane, in Seaton, to Colyford Common near the junction of Seaton Road/Popes Lane, in Colyford.

The route was granted planning permission in September 2011.

Phonic FM’s call to artists – deadline approaching

This September and October, England will host Rugby World Cup 2015. Three of the tournament’s matches will be played at the Sandy Park ground in Exeter.

With support from Exeter City Council, Phonic FM is inviting proposals for original creative audio portraits of Exeter and its communities, in some way exploring the reach and influence of the Rugby World Cup 2015 matches in the city.

These hour-long works will be broadcast on Phonic FM around the time of the matches at Sandy Park. They will also be posted online, shared with other broadcasters and deposited for posterity...

Number of mentally ill people in police custody falls

Police in Devon and Cornwall have welcomed a new report from the National Police Chief’s Council showing a nationwide reduction in the use of police custody cells as a place of safety for those suffering mental illness.

Historically, police cells have been used to house those people detained under Section 136 of the Mental Health Act 1983. The Government announced earlier this year that it would seek legislation to prohibit the use of police cells as a place of safety for under-18s and reduce the 72 maximum detention period for adults.

Dig out your wellies for a fact-finding mud walk along the Exe Estuary led by East Devon District Council’s Countryside Rangers on Saturday June 20.
