Anonymous benefactor donates £7k for new bus shelter

A fairy godperson has flown to the rescue of East Devon District Council by donating the full price of a new bus shelter - £6,840 – to replace the vandalised shelter at Sidmouth Triangle, which the council had to remove for safety reasons. Budget cuts had meant that the council were unable to replace the shelter, which was so badly damaged by fire that it required a complete – and costly - rebuild in hardwood. A severe weather warning for heavy rain and thunderstorms has been issued for Devon today.

Persistent rain, locally very heavy, will spread across southwest England and south Wales today, whilst isolated severe thunderstorms may well develop further east bringing the risk of torrential downpours. Rain and showers will spread north through Friday night into Saturday morning, easing with time. A3072 at Bickleigh to close for eight weeks

The A3072 at Bickleigh will be closed for eight weeks from Monday (15 June) as essential work is carried out to replace a section of safety barriers.

The existing barrier has been damaged and needs replacing urgently to maintain the safety of motorists using the road.

A 50 metre stretch of the barrier, located up the hill from the Bickleigh Castle junction, will be upgraded with an improved system which reduces the risk of injury to motorists should they come into contact with the road restraints.

University hosts Being Human 2015 events

The University of Exeter is hosting a series of events for Being Human 2015, the UK’s only national festival of the humanities. This involves a broad range of events including digital storytelling in Dartmoor, a theme park installation game aimed at teenagers, macro filming workshops exploring the body to creating modern folk ballads that reflects the heritage of the South West.

The programme has been made possible by a grant from the festival organisers, the School of Advanced Study, University of London with additional funds for specific projects from the University of Exeter....

Baxter delighted as McGuigan signs on

Rob Baxter believes there is “more to come” from Byron McGuigan after the talented back today agreed to extend his stay with the Exeter Chiefs for another year at least.

The 25-year-old Namibian was initially brought to Sandy Park last November following as injury cover for compatriot Chrysander Botha, who was ruled out for much of the campaign after breaking his leg whilst away on international duty.
