The Exe is home to thousands of birds which arrive in the autumn from the Arctic regions and spend the winter here before returning north in the spring. A driver sustained life-threatening injuries following a single-vehicle collision on the A377 at Crediton on Saturday night (10 July).
Emergency services were called around 10.50pm after the silver Peugeot 206 Estate left the road near Hookway Cross and struck a granite post and trees.
The 41-year-old male driver from Crediton sustained serious head and chest injuries which were described as life-threatening.
He was taken to Royal Devon and Exeter Hospital and later transferred to Derriford Hospital in Plymouth where he remains in a serious condition.
