Councillors have approved plans which set out priorities for developing cycling and walking improvements in a number of areas of the county.

Devon County Council’s Cabinet yesterday (Wednesday 10 January) backed the Local Cycling and Walking Infrastructure Plans (LCWIPs) which outline cycling and walking improvements for Exeter, Teignbridge, and Barnstaple, Bideford and Northam over the next 10 to 20 years.

Walking and cycling schemes in the county have received a £2.1 million cash injection after Devon County Council secured Active Travel Funding from central government .

A number of priority active travel projects in Exeter, Newton Abbot, North Devon and Torridge will be supported with the funding to enable and encourage more people to walk and cycle.

A public consultation has been launched on ambitious proposals to enable and encourage more people to walk and cycle in Exeter.

A new online film has been launched for East Devon Pebblebed Heaths Conservation Trust’s Heath Week (this week), designed to help dog owners and walkers enjoy the great British countryside safely this summer.

Two sisters from the south west will be walking the White Horse Trail, a 100-mile route through Wiltshire offering views of the eight white horses that are cut into the turf of the chalk hillsides, to raise money for the RAF Benevolent Fund and the RAF Air Cadets. People wanted from every town and city to help make a new national walking network

During the Spring 2020 lockdown volunteers from across the nation plotted a network of walking routes that connect all of Great Britain’s towns and cities.

Without leaving home over 7,000 ‘Slow Ways’ walking routes were mapped using existing paths, trails and roads. Combined, the routes stretch for 100,000km and lap the equator twice.

The team behind Slow Ways is now looking for people from every town and city in Great Britain to walk and review the routes to make sure they work in practice.

Exeter Ramblers reveal hidden walking trails of Exeter

The Exeter and District Ramblers have produced a collection of hand-picked trails to encourage Exeter residents to get outside and discover a new side to their city.

The collection has been published as a book called Walking Around Exeter, with contributions from different members of the group and tested for accuracy and clarity. The 16 routes in the collection range from 2.5 to 7 miles in length, and are suitable for all ages and abilities.

It comes quickly, doesn’t it?
