Jim’s Journey: A 630-mile crusade against cancer

A former NHS communications manager from Mid Devon is preparing to walk 630 miles along the entire South West Coast Path this summer to raise money for two local charities that support cancer patients and their families.

Jim Bray left his job with the Northern Devon Healthcare NHS Trust last month to take up an eight-week challenge entitled Jim’s Journey.

The 36-year-old will be raising money for Exeter-based charity FORCE and the Seamoor Unit, the new £2.5 million chemotherapy and day treatment centre at North Devon District Hospital in Barnstaple.

Activity day and sensory walk in Exeter

Sense, the national deafblind charity, will host a day of activities in Exeter on Friday 24 June to coincide with Deafblind Awareness Week which runs from the 24th until 30th June.

The day, which will include a 4 km sensory walk, arts and crafts displays and tasters in signing and braille, will build on the success of last year’s event which was organised by Roger Mulholland, a local deafblind man who has sadly since passed away. Exeter ladies prepare double blow for cancer at Race for Life 10k

Hundreds of ladies are preparing to give cancer ‘double trouble’ at Cancer Research UK’s Race for Life by taking part in the 10k event at Westpoint Exeter this month.

Race for Life 10k will take place on Sunday, 26 July and over 600 determined ladies have already signed up to show the disease that hell hath no fury like a woman in pink.

Event organisers are calling on mothers, daughters, sisters, friends and workmates who want to take on the challenge to sign up as soon as possible.

Jenny Plackett, from the ‘Two Moors Threatened Butterfly Project’ will talk about the work being done on a landscape scale across Dartmoor (and Exmoor), which aims to reverse the declines in three important UK threatened butterfly species: the Marsh Fritillary, High Brown Fritillary and Heath Fritillary.

Simon Phelps of ‘All the Moor Butterflies’ will then run a practical butterfly identification workshop...
