Grayling announces new Dawlish sea wall as part of £2 billion investment in SW

Transport Secretary Chris Grayling has today (15 February 2019) announced further funding of up to £80 million in the south-west to deliver a new sea wall at Dawlish, providing better protection for the railway and homes behind it.

Upgrades to the sea wall will increase its height by 2.5 metres and include wave returns to reduce the impact of waves and the likelihood of the line being closed during adverse weather. This will help ensure the serious damage and disruption seen during storms in 2014 is not repeated.

The improvements at Dawlish are part of an extensive...

Residents are invited to an event to celebrate the completion of Network Rail’s work in Dawlish to repair the damage caused by last year’s storms and make the area more resilient for the future.

Over the last few weeks the ‘orange army’ completed the final milestone in their 18-month project to repair Dawlish’s railway line; rebuild and strengthen the sea wall; and carry out cliff stabilisation work at Teignmouth, to prevent any future extreme weather causing the level of damage that occurred last year.

The final phase of this momentous project involved building a new wall...

Today (5 February) marks the one year anniversary of the severe storms which battered the Devon coastline, and washed away part of the Dawlish railway line and sea-wall.

Twelve months later, Network Rail’s ‘orange army’ of engineers has rebuilt the railway, enabling train services to run through Dawlish for the past 10 months, and has continued working around the clock to bolster and improve its defences for the local community and businesses alike.

A year ago, as turbulent storms washed away part of the railway line, Network Rail’s team was on the scene immediately The 300...

Citizen science helping our cuckoos

Dartmoor Cuckoos have reached the Congo rainforest ahead of schedule this year, at a time when they would normally be taking a break and recovering body condition during their long migration.

It seems the dry weather conditions may have encouraged them to head south weeks earlier than expected. The cuckoos have been fitted with satellite tags as part of a national project to monitor migration routes.

The project is being co-ordinated by the British Trust for Ornithology (BTO). Emsworthy was amongst the first UK Cuckoos to arrive in the Congo rainforest and has been joined...

South Devon community comes together to tackle storm damage

The track from the village of South Huish to the National Trust car park at South Milton Sands in South Devon is now open again following a dynamic response from the local community.

The devastating Valentine’s Day storm destroyed the track and around two thirds of the sand dunes. Boardwalks and fencing were also torn up and the beach was littered with debris. The beach was still accessible from the village of South Milton but not from neighbouring South Huish.

Following the storm, the National Trust held a meeting with key stakeholders to discuss the damage and hear...
