Safety to be improved in Leat Street, Tiverton

A new zebra crossing is to be installed on the A3126 in Tiverton.

Work on the Devon County Council scheme, which will create a crossing at Leat Street, is due to start on Monday 13 January.

Crossing Leat Street is difficult for pedestrians at present, due to limited visibility of traffic exiting the roundabout with Kennedy Way.

The crossing is south of this roundabout and will provide a walking route linking the western area of Tiverton to the hospital, Tiverton High Street and Petroc Community College.

Child airlifted after M5 Crash

A child has been airlifted to Frenchay hospital in Bristol following an accident on the M5 near Tiverton.

The child was injured when the car he was travelling in left the slip road at junction 27 and overturned into a ditch.

Although hurt the child’s injuries were not life-threatening and no-one else in the vehicle was badly injured.

Devon and Somerset fire and Rescue confirmed that the car collided with the back of a heavy goods tanker before landing on its roof in the ditch.

The car had three children as passengers and all were assessed by ambulance crews...

Boost for Tiverton Canal

More than 4,000 tench and bream were released into the Tiverton Canal this week to help replace fish lost following a spectacular bank collapse near Halberton in November 2012.

Thousands of fish including pike, perch, bream, tench, roach and eels were washed out of the canal after a section of bank gave way following torrential rain. Water from the canal flooded surrounding fields creating a temporary lake.

Environment Agency officers assisted by members of the Tiverton Angling Club launched an emergency rescue and successfully returned more than 400 fish to the canal, but...

As British households prepare to face the cold winter, new research reveals 3,000 households in Tiverton and Honiton are eligible for assistance from their energy supplier with heating their homes. The findings from Home Heat Helpline show that a total of 3.6 million households across Great Britain qualify for help.

West Country Beef and West Country Lamb will become protected names across Europe from next year onwards.

Meat produced in six south west counties including Devon will receive the same protected status as Jersey Royal Potatoes, Scottish Wild Salmon and Cornish Clotted Cream through a Protected Geographical Indication (PGI).

The PGI means local goods will be given legal protection against imitation that will help them build a brand name without its reputation being damaged by inferior products.

MP pledges support for HIV campaign

Neil Parish, MP for Tiverton and Honiton, has pledged his support for Halve It, a national coalition campaign that aims to halve late diagnosis and undiagnosed HIV in the UK by 2015.

Local MP presets petition to defend rural spending

Last night, Neil Parish MP, presented the Rural Fair Share Petition signed by the residents of Tiverton and Honiton. The Rural Fair Share campaign is calling on the Government to address the ongoing disparity in funding between rural and urban areas.

The campaign is set up to counter policies such as the rural penalty which sees urban areas receive 50% more support per head than rural areas.
