Council re-oxygenates canal in response to fish deaths

Devon County Council has responded to a recent spate of fish deaths at the Grand Western Canal near Sampford Peverell by taking action to re-oxygenate the water in that section of the Canal.

Several hundred small roach and a number of larger roach and pike died recently when oxygen levels in the canal dramatically declined.

The problem was caused by a natural algal bloom that grew towards the end of the recent spell of hot sunny weather.

When the sunny spell ended and the weather turned cloudy, the algae stopped producing as much oxygen, but continued to deplete...

Handbag stolen from 94-year-old woman in Tiverton

Police are appealing for witnesses after a 94-year-old woman had her handbag stolen in a Tiverton supermarket.

The woman visited the café at Morrisons between 6.15pm and 6.30pm on Friday evening (26 July) and placed her handbag on the floor next to her chair. She heard a noise behind her and when she looked down her handbag had gone. The red handbag contained cash, various cards and a Nokia mobile phone. The victim, who is from Buckinghamshire, was in the area to visit family and had stopped briefly at the café. Police are appealing for witnesses and are particularly keen to speak...

Update 5pm: As a result of the earlier appeal, a potential witness has been identified and has spoken to the Police.

Earlier today (25 July): Police are looking to identify a male cyclist (pictured) who is a witness to the house fire at Magnolia Court in Tiverton on Tuesday 23 July.

He cycled past the fire before emergency services arrived, possibly more than once. He may hold vital information.

Hard work leads to improvements at Tiverton primary

Two years of hard work has led to considerable improvements at a Tiverton primary school, according to education inspectors.

They say action taken by school leaders at Bolham Primary has promoted better teaching and led to improving progress.

Suspicious fire in Tiverton prompts police appeal

A joint Police and Fire Service investigation has been launched following a fire that damaged four properties in Tiverton. The fire broke out at Magnolia Court at around 4pm yesterday (Tuesday, 23 July 2013). The fire, which is being treated as suspicious, spread to four properties, causing extensive damage to one house. No-one was injured. A 30-year-old local man was arrested in connection with the incident and was later released on Police bail until 25 September 2013. Turf cutting marks start of Grand Western Canal repairs

An official turf cutting was held at the Grand Western Canal on Monday (8 July) to mark the start of restoration work.

The Canal suffered a serious breach of its northern bank near the Swing Bridge at Halberton on 21 November last year, after water spilled over the top of the embankment during torrential downpours and flooding.
