Wimbledon is the oldest and arguably most iconic of the four tennis Grand Slams. The first edition of the tournament was held at the All England Club back in 1877 and it has remained on the grass surface of the prestigious south-west London venue ever since.

This year marked the 136th renewal of the Grand Slam and Carlos Alcaraz added his name to the roll of honour for the first time, putting an end to Novak Djokovic’s dominance on Centre Court with a 1-6, 7-6(6), 6-1, 3-6, 6-4 win in the final on July 16.

Wimbledon is one of the most iconic British sporting events of the summer, and for many, it is a chance to enjoy some good weather and nice food and drink, all while leisurely taking in some tennis.

But for those out on the court, it’s far from a relaxing experience. Many players will be heading to Wimbledon this year eager to prove a point, or to chase vital ranking points to preserve their status amongst the game’s elite.

Princesshay presents live screenings of Wimbledon alongside three family films

Princesshay is bringing Wimbledon to Exeter with live outdoor screenings of matches on a giant screen. The screen will be in Princesshay Square for the duration of the legendary two-week tournament (Monday 3rd July – Sunday 16th July 2023).

Tennis fans will be able sit and watch the prime court matches free of charge on picnic benches and deckchairs within Princesshay Green in the main square.

An Exeter School pupil is looking to begin university life across the Atlantic this September. Matt Rutter, currently an Upper Sixth pupil has been offered a place to study economics at the prestigious University of Pennsylvania where he will also be able to develop his thriving tennis career as part of the National Collegiate Athletics Association (NCAA) which saw both John Isner and Cameron Norrie (the current British number one) compete before joining the professional circuit.

Rise of Raducanu set to inspire a new tennis generation in Exeter

The rise of the teenage tennis sensation Emma Raducanu may inspire youngsters in Exeter to pick up a racket and take advantage of the city’s free tennis facilities.

That’s the hope of Exeter City Council’s Lead Councillor for Leisure & Physical Activity, Cllr Duncan Wood, who believes the new British Number One’s incredible run in the US Open will serve as an inspiration to those starting out or considering taking up tennis.

“We have great tennis facilities in Exeter, in our parks, where people of all ages and abilities can play for free,” said Cllr Wood.

Ace performance from ECS pupil

Exeter Cathedral School Pupil, Sammy, who is in Year 4, represented Devon Tennis at the Under 9 County Cup Regional Group Event in Bath on Saturday 15 May.

The team of 5 boys had a busy day and played 22 matches over 5 hours against 4 other counties including 6 doubles and 16 singles matches. Sammy was selected to play in 6 matches and was the only one to be undefeated!

The Devon Boys Team had a fantastic event, beating Somerset 5-1, Avon 5-1, South Wales 5-1 and Cornwall 4-0 and finished the day as South West Regional Champions!

2 million strawberries and 700 litres of cream go to waste as Wimledon is cancelled

50% of Brits say strawberries & cream is the first thing they associate with the tennis. An annual tradition for many, new research collated by Fresh Student Living reveals that Wimbledon fans descending upon the championships, snack their way through a mountain-sized 2 million strawberries and 7000 litres of cream in a fortnight - amounting to 190,000 portions in 14 days!

Following the cancellation of most of the UK’s Summer events, this year, the fate of 28,000kg of British strawberries hangs in the balance, with Wimbledon facing almost half a million pounds in lost revenue...

Former Wimbledon player now lives at Hatherleigh Nursing Home

With the 2019 Wimbledon Tennis Championships now over and the long queues for strawberries and cream now sated, it is exciting to discover that one of the “family members” living at Hatherleigh Nursing Home, is 81-year-old Rosie Jewell. Rosie is a former tennis player who played in the under eighteens team at the Wimbledon Championships in 1954, getting through to the quarter-finals. Jewell is her married name, but in 1954 she was playing under her maiden name, Rosemary Wooller.

Exeter kids inspired to pick up a racquet and get active as tennis fever hits Exeter

Youngsters in Exeter and Devon are being encouraged to give tennis a try for the first time as part of a drive to get families from communities across the region more active.

With the second week of Wimbledon underway and Brit hope Johanna Konta into the quarter-finals, children from the city took to the courts at Heavitree Pleasure Grounds earlier this week to take part in a Tennis for Kids taster session led by local coaches.

The LTA, the national governing body for tennis in Great Britain, and Exeter City Council joined forces to showcase one of the many courses...

Play tennis for free on newly refurbished courts in Exeter

Special ‘turn up and play’ sessions have been organised on courts at Cowick Barton Playing Fields, with free tuition from a qualified coach thrown in for good measure. The City Council is working in partnership with Tennis for Free and local community programme Exwick Tennis Hub to offer the informal sessions on a weekly basis. The sessions start on Saturday 15 September from 9am to 11am and anyone can get involved, including those new to the game, keen to meet other local tennis players or to simply enjoy an opportunity to be active with the family.
