Stolen property found in Sidmouth

Police investigating a series of burglaries in East Devon are hoping to return a number of items to their rightful owners.

Officers found the property following their investigations into a burglary in Sidmouth but police do not know who the items belong to or where they came from.

The recovered property includes a key fob which says “lounge french door”, a tea towel with ladybirds and daisies, and an envelope with a horse on which contained some old bank notes.

Anyone who believes the items are theirs should call DC Matt Burnell on 101.

Sidmouth trees to be cut back for public safety

Work aimed at improving the safety of walkers in the Byes in Sidmouth starts on Monday 8 December.

A row of Poplar trees in Sidmouth are to be cut back by tree surgeons for the safety of the public.

The six large trees at the end of Water Lane have been shedding heavy branches onto the footpath at frequent intervals during the year.

The trees have been inspected by an East Devon District Council Tree Officer, who has recommended that they should be reduced to around 15 metres (45 to 50 feet).

Sidmouth man pleads guilty to manslaughter of pensioner

A 42-year-old man has pleaded guilty to the manslaughter of a pensioner in Sidmouth

Nicholas Jamieson, from Sidmouth, today pleaded guilty at Exeter Crown Court to the manslaughter of Brian Kemp.

He has been sentenced to a hospital order with restrictions. Mr Jamieson was arrested following the death of Brian Kemp, 71, on 26 September 2014.

Mr Kemp had been assaulted with a weapon at the Blackhorse Hotel in Sidmouth.

Donkey century for Dorothy!

A donkey-mad grandmother has knitted her 100th toy donkey in aid of The Donkey Sanctuary. Dorothy Harrison, from Beacon Heath, Exeter, started knitting the toys after picking up a knitting pattern on a visit to The Donkey Sanctuary in Sidmouth in 2011 and enjoyed knitting the donkeys so much she set herself the challenge of knitting 100. Sidmouth's new gym is ready to use!

East Devon District Council has been working hard with Sidmouth Town Council to provide residents with the free-to-use outdoor gym that they wanted.

There will be a grand opening event on Sunday 2 November from 10.30am to 11.30am. There will be free lessons from a personal trainer on how to get the best out of the new equipment, as well as free circus skills on offer!

Work to reinstate the depleted shingle beaches in front of the town and below the cliffs at East Beach in Sidmouth could start within a month - if East Devon District Council can obtain approval for the job and funding to pay for it.

Pedestrians injured in Sidbury collision

Two elderly people have been injured in a serious collision at Sidbury near Sidmouth. Police and emergency services were called to the A375 at 11.50am after a water tanker became detached from a tractor and was in collision with the couple. The casualties have sustained serious leg injuries and both have been treated at the scene by paramedics. The female casualty has been taken to Royal Devon and Exeter Hospital.
