Police appeal for sightings of missing Plymouth boy

Police are trying to locate the whereabouts of Kharim Rhony, a 15-year-old boy missing from foster parents. He was last seen at his address in the Stoke area of Plymouth intending to go swimming at the Life Centre.

He is described as being of Arabic appearance with dark olive skin. He is 5ft2in tall, with a slight build and short, curly hair.

He was last seen wearing a blue hoody, blue jeans, white canvas shoes and gloves. He was also carrying a black backpack.

Anyone who has information about his whereabouts should ring police using the 101 non emergency line and...

Bristol man steps in as Echo editor is seconded to new role

The editor of Exeter’s Express & Echo newspaper has been seconded to a new role.

He is to be replaced in the interim period by a journalist from Bristol however, no timescales have been revealed.

Andy Phelan was previously the editor of the Echo’s sister paper, the Torquay Herald Express.

In December last year, Northcliffe Media, the group which owned both newspapers, as well as the Western Morning News and the Herald in Plymouth was sold and now forms part of a regional publisher called Local World.

Devon police issue statement following death in bookmakers

Devon and Cornwall Police have issued a statement following an incident in which a man died during an attempted armed robbery at a bookmakers.

The man, in his 50s, entered the Ladbrokes branch in Crownhill Road at 6.45pm yesterday.

Plymouth's police commander, Chief Superintendent Andy Bickley has made the following statement today (Saturday 26 January):

"Last night’s events resulted in the tragic death of a Plymouth man. His family are being supported by police and our thoughts and condolences are with his family at this sad and difficult time.

Funding bids invited to help fight illegal money lending

Groups that help victims of illegal money lenders are being offered the chance to apply for a share of £3,000.

The Home Office illegal money lending team, based in Birmingham, wants organisations in Plymouth to bid for cash to support ideas that promote its work.

The team is looking for ideas that raise awareness of the dangers of using loan sharks, promote legal credit options and good financial management, or prevent crime and disorder linked to illegal money lending.

Man dies after being struck by train at Dawlish

A man has died after being hit by a train at Dawlish Warren.

British Transport Police have declared yesterday's incident as 'non-suspicious' but no further details have been released at this time.

There is also a signalling problem in the Plymouth area. Because of this, the following changes will apply until further notice:

  • Trains between Plymouth and Exeter St Davids may be delayed by up to 60 minutes.
  • First Great Western services between Plymouth and Exeter St Davids are currently suspended.

42-year-old man dies in A38 Parkway collision

A 42-year-old man, who was involved in a two vehicle Road Traffic Collision at 0548hrs this morning (Tuesday 22nd January 2013), has died of his injuries at Derriford Hospital. His next of kin have been informed.

The incident occured on the A38 Parkway, Eastbound between the Manadon off slip and Forder Valley on slip. The two vehicles involved in the collision were a Ford Fiesta and a Toyota Avensis. At the time of the collision the road surface was icy, following a recent hail storm.

Drivers urged to take care on icy roads after collision on A38

Update: The road has now reopened.

Earlier: One man involved in the earlier multi-vehicle road traffic accident on the A38 and has been taken to Derriford Hospital and is said to be in a critical condition.

There were a total of five collisions involving ten vehicles on the A38 Eastbound carriageway.

The A38 at The Parkway in Plymouth is still closed and slow traffic is queuing eastbound between Manadon Roundabout and Forder Valley Interchange, because of accident investigation work. Approach with care.

The road is expected to be closed until 1pm.

Stereophonics to play Plymouth Pavilions in March

Stereophonics are to play 10 intimate UK shows in March and Plymouth Pavilions is one of the chosen few venues. The band will return to the city on Saturday 23rd March 2013.

Modbury Woman charged with murder of two-year-old

Update: Angela Vane, aged 40, who has been accused of murdering her two-year-old son, appeared at Torquay Magistrates' Court this morning. Charged with the murder of toddler Shaun O’Neill, Ms Vane did not enter a plea at a hearing at Torquay Magistrate's Court today. She will appear at Plymouth Crown Court on Wednesday, 23rd January.

Shaun's body was taken to Derriford Hospital and a post-mortem examination was carried out over the weekend. It is understood that relatives of the child have been informed about his death and of Ms Vane being charged.

Top divers head to Plymouth for British Championships

Britain’s top divers will be gathering in Plymouth in a few weeks time for the first national competition of the new season.

Ten of the 12 divers who represented Team GB at London 2012 will be competing in the British Gas Diving Championships taking place at the Plymouth Life Centre from Friday 8th February to Sunday 10th February.

They include Plymouth’s own Tom Daley, Tonia Couch and Sarah Barrow.
