David Cameron visits Dawlish repairworks

Prime Minister, David Cameron, has today visited the destroyed track near Dawlish as part of his tour of the storm damage in the South West. Mr Cameron met with the repair force from Network Rail and thanked railway staff for their work to retain service via replacement bus and alternative travel schemes. Bomb fears stall Exmouth storm repairs

A suspected unexploded bomb found in Exmouth has put emergency repair work on hold while bomb disposal teams approach the “mystery canister”.

Eight workers from Eastr Devon District council were on the seafront near the boating lake helping to dismantle an ice cream hut that was in danger of being washed out to sea and becoming a danger to shipping.

When the canister was spotted, Coastguard officers were called and they decided to enforce a 30-metre exclusion zone, which mean that work on the hut had to be suspended until Bomb Disposal officers from Plymouth reached the...

Inquest to be held as Harry Martin is formally identified

The body recovered from the sea last Saturday (11 January) has been formally identified as the missing teenager Harry Martin today (16 January).

A formal inquest into the death of Mr Martin, who went missing from his home in Newton Ferrers during the height of the recent storms, is due to begin next Monday (20 January).

The 18-year-old’s body was found in Carswell Bay in the Noss Mayo area by friends who were aiding in the search effort using sea kayaks.

Plymouth man charged with Murder

A 35-year-old man has been charged with murder following the death of a man in Plymouth on Friday 3rd January 2014.

Samuel Watts of King Street, Plymouth, will appear at Plymouth Magistrates Court on Monday 6th January after being charged with the offence on Saturday 4th January.

Police and ambulance were called to a property in King Street, Stonehouse, after concerns for welfare for a man inside. On entering the property they found a 38-year-old man who had sustained a serious stab wound. He was treated by ambulance staff but was pronounced deceased at the scene.

One in eight people in the South West fear they won’t be able to afford to pay the rent or mortgage at the end of this month, according to new research from Shelter released today.

The research, based on a YouGov survey of over 4,000 British adults, suggests that millions of us across the country will be starting the New Year worried about whether we’ll be able to keep their home.

Police have said they are “growing increasingly concerned” for a 13-year-old girl who has been missing since yesterday morning.

Bethany Gordon, 13, was last seen yesterday morning at Barnstaple Retail Park wearing a green three quarter length coat, grey leggings and black and white shoes.

Police believe she may have made her way to the Plymouth area where she has friends.

Marine A named as Sgt. Alexander Blackman

Judges have ruled that the Devon-based marine who shot and killed an injured prisoner will be publicly named as Sgt. Alexander Blackman.

Three of the UK's most senior judges made the ruling this morning and say that the two acquitted marines should also be named.

Lawyers defending the 5 servicemen involved in the case have argued that naming the defendants will put their families at risk of retaliation from terrorists.

There have been concerns however that the Marines remaining named goes against the British legal principles of open justice.

Microplastics make marine worms sick

Tiny bits of plastic rubbish could spell big trouble for marine life, starting with the worms, say a team of researchers from the University of Exeter and Plymouth University who report their evidence in a pair of studies in the Cell Press journal Current Biology. PCC Tony Hogg in public Q&A

Police and Crime Commissioner Tony Hogg will answer the public’s questions on policing in Devon and Cornwall at a meeting in Plymouth tonight.

At the meeting in the Council House in Plymouth, Tony Hogg along with Chief Constable Shaun Sawyer will take questions submitted online and over the phone.

The doors will open at 7pm with the meeting itself starting promptly at 7:30pm.

Plymouth woman forgot she knew photo-taking 'burglar'

A Plymouth woman who reported a burglar had taken a picture of himself on her phone has said that she knows the man in the photo.

The woman found a picture on her mobile of an unknown man sitting in her home

The woman contacted Devon and Cornwall Police believing that a burglar had left a chilling calling card.

However, in what the police have called a “genuine lapse in memory” the unnamed woman forgot that the man had been in her house and was known to her.
