To commemorate the 70th anniversary of D-Day the Exeter-based Met Office has released a series of videos detailing the part paid by forecasters in the planning of the landings on June 6 1944. The videos pay tribute to role that Met Office forecasters had in helping with preparations for the invasion fleet. Summer floods to become more frequent

Summer downpours and flash flooding are expected to become far more frequent across South England and Wales according to new research by the Exeter based Met Office and Newcastle University. The study, published in the Nature Climate Change, used a high-resolution model to predict the effects that climate change would have on UK’s summer floods. They found that, in a worst case scenario hourly summer rainfall could become five times more frequent by the end of the century, which would hugely increase the chance of ‘flash floods.’ Dr Lizzie Kendon, lead author of the study from the Met...

Thunderstorms throughout Devon on Thursday

Visitors to Devon County Show were being urged to don their wellies as thunderstorms are expected throughout Devon today (Thursday).

Forecasters predict that areas of heavy and locally thundery rain will move north and west across the southern half of England along with Wales during the early hours.

A brief period of drier weather reaching the extreme southeast around midnight Thursday will follow northwestwards, probably reaching much of Wales and southwest England later in the morning.

But scattered locally heavy showers, with the risk of some slow-moving thundery...

Beautiful weekend weather ahead

The recent good weather is set to continue this weekend as forecasters predict temperatures to reach 20C across Devon. Met Office forecasters say that the sunny weather is expected to last across the weekend and carry through into next week. Today (Saturday) patches of cloud will accompany the sun and are expected to clear by the early evening. Sunday will be cloudier than Saturday but again temperatures will remain high throughout the day. Monday sees temprtetures remain high but also brings a chance of showers in the afternoon. Light cooling breezes are expected throughout the weekend...

South West set for a windy evening

Saturday may be nearly over, but it looks like the wind is here to stay. The Met Office have issued a Yellow weather warning of wind, with high gales set to hit the South West until midnight tonight.

Gusts of 50 to 60 mph are predicted for the region this evening.

The public should be aware that this could lead to difficult driving conditions and perhaps some disruption to outdoor activities.

Heavy rain disrupts Ten Tors plans

Heavy rain expected to cause issues for the organisers of this weekend’s Ten Tors challenge. As a result of the recent rain, concerns have been raised over the state of several car parks near the starting line in Okehampton, making them unavailable for spectator’s vehicles. With spectators and the family members of more than 2,400 young people taking part in challenge hoping to support the teams at the starting line, the limited car parking is likely to be significant disruption. More Scattered heavy showers and thunderstorms are likely to develop north of Exeter later from noon today, forecasters say. The Met Office has issued a yellow weather warning due to the risk of surface water flooding caused by the showers but have cautioned that th location of the showers is still uncertain. Due to the uncertainty in the likely distribution of showers, Met Office forecasters are advising the public to monitor the website for possible updates. Heavy rain may disrupt travel

Surface water flooding may cause some travel disruption this afternoon as the Met Office issue a yellow weather warning for this afternoon (28 April).

Heavy, thundery downpours are expected to develop from 1pm bringing between 10-15mm of rain within an hour.

Some areas will see 30mm of rain over a longer period and may be enough to create minor travel disruption from surface water flooding.

Ice and yet more rain to hit the South West

Despite it being reported that the bad weather was on its way out, the Met Office have issued warnings of ice and rain to hit the South West over the next couple of days.

The Met Office have predicted that as skys clear and and winds ease, icy stretches could form ( Sunday 16th February).

Because of this a Yellow warning of ice has been issued for today ( Sunday 16th February).
