Stats point to average autumn

Early statistics for autumn 2013 suggest it has been a fairly normal season overall with temperature, rainfall and sunshine amounts all quite close to the long-term average, the Met Office says in its latest blog (below):

Our early season assessment for autumn (Sep-Nov) uses figures from 1 September to 27 November, then assumes average conditions for the final few days of November.

According to that estimate, the UK mean temperature for the season is currently 9.8 °C, just 0.4 °C above the long-term average.

Devon to freeze in icy blast

The Met office has warned of incoming frost as temperatures plunge in Devon.

An icy blast is set to end the current mild spell in the South of England and will begin a period of low average tempretures over the coming months.

The Met Office said: “Indications are that December will most likely be colder than average.

“For December-January-February as a whole uncertainty is quite large but below-average temperatures are more likely than above-average.”

The average temperature in December is 3.9C while January is slightly chillier at 3.6C.

Chance of snow by end of the month

The Met Office’s long range forecast has said that the chances of snow will increase from the last week of November as we begin to see more wintry conditions in the run up to Christmas.

Although the prediction comes from the long range forecast, it could be an early indication of snowfall in the coming months.

On average, the UK gets 33 days of snow fall or sleet a year Most of this is snow falling on higher ground where temperatures are lower.

Rain, rain go away...

Keep your brollies handy... you're going to need them! Forecasters are predicting more wet weather this week. The Met Office forecast is as follows: Monday: Generally wet and windy through the morning. Turning increasingly drier through the afternoon, with winds easing. Wellies at the ready... there's more wind and rain on the way

The clocks going back signal the end of summer and it seems the weather has duly obliged.

The beginning of half term week didn't start too well and it seems it will end in similar fashion.

Forecasters are predicting more rain, strong winds and temperatures as low as 3C for Exeter, Mid and East Devon.

Met Office issues warning as more heavy rain is forecast

The Met Office has issued another yellow warning for the South West as the forecast for the next few days continues to bring rain and the risk of localised flooding to the region.

The Met Office said: "Further heavy showers are likely through the rest of Tuesday and particularly overnight into Wednesday, when organised bands of heavy showers and thunderstorms will move northeastwards, accompanied by squally winds.

"The public should be aware of the risk of disruption, mainly due to localised flooding, but also where squally winds occur."

Met Office issues warning of heavy rain and possible flooding

The Met Office has issued a yellow warning of further outbreaks of heavy, thundery rain for the South West during Thursday and Friday (3rd and 4th October). It has warned the public of the risk of flooding.

The Met Office reports: "Further outbreaks of heavy, thundery, rain will spread from the south during Thursday and overnight into Friday with the potential for some torrential downpours in places."

"The public should be aware of the risk of localised flooding."

'Think tank' criticisms of Met Office climate change data have "not been substatianted"

A ‘think-tank’ report that the Exeter-based Met Office is ‘over-exaggerating’ climate change has been criticised for making unsubstatiated claims.

The Global Warming Policy Foundation, managed by prominent climate change sceptic Lord Lawson, released a report which claims that a computer programme used by the Met Office to measure climate change is biased in favour of showing climate change.

The Foundation has argued that this has skewed evidence of the UKCP09, the UK’s official climate projections.

Warning of heavy rain and possible floods in the region on Saturday

The Met Office has issued a yellow warning of rain for the region, including Plymouth, on Saturday (7 September), with the risk of possible localised flooding.

The warning highlights "periods of heavy and persistent rain

"The public should be aware that there is a risk of localised disruption due to flooding.

"Some flooding from rivers or surface water is possible. There is still significant uncertainty as to where and when the heaviest rainfall and greatest impacts will occur and this alert will be updated on Friday."
