New women only marathon announced for Devon

A new women-only marathon has been announced for Devon in 2017 to mark the 50th anniversary of a famous incident which helped pave the way for women to be able to officially take part in marathons.

The Women Can marathon on 28 May 2017 is almost entirely off-road, taking in the breathtaking Otter and Sid Valleys and part of the South West Coast Path on the Jurassic Coast World Heritage Site in East Devon.

Largely rural, the course also includes picturesque Devon villages and the towns of Sidmouth and Ottery St Mary.

Marathon month for club runners

By mid-May, Lee Cooke the Gym Manager at Exeter Golf and Country Club Gym Manager will have run two marathons and completed an endurance 24 hour run for children’s charity, VICTA.

Despite only starting running two years ago, Lee has achieved what usually takes many years for most experience runners. Spurred on by personal drive and his passion for the charity VICTA, Lee achieved good times in both the Paris and London marathons in April. He is now training for his next big event, the Hope 24.

This year's Exeter Great West Run will take place on Sunday 16 October.

Pulse Sport ( www.pulsesport.co.uk ) has taken on the management and organisation of the run, and are pleased to confirm the appointment of Exeter-based race organiser Mark Cowen as Race Director.

Two fifths of people in SW confess they get out of breath running for a bus

Over two fifths of people in the South West have confessed to being so unfit they would get out of breath running for the bus, according to new statistics released as part of the British Heart Foundation’s (BHF) brand new fundraising challenge MyMarathon. The BHF poll revealed well over half (52%) of adults in the South West said if they went running now the furthest they could manage is just half a mile or less. One in five (20%) felt they could only make it to 100 metres. Of those who could manage to run a mile, a third of people (33%) said the last time they did was over 10 years ago....

Four-time Olympian runner and European 10,000 metre champion Jo Pavey delighted crowds in Exeter on Sunday morning, as she started 2,842 participants off on the iconic 31st Exeter’s Great West Run, sponsored by Tozers! Shaun Antell from Bideford AAC improved on his third place from last years race, by taking the winning spot in one hour ten minutes and seven seconds, in good running conditions. In second place was Berihu Hadera from Exeter Harriers in one hour ten minutes and fifty two seconds, followed by Andrew Chambers in one hour ten minutes and fifty five seconds. Best women's...

Great West Run route and road closures

Exeter’s Great West Run will be taking place on Sunday 18th October 2015.

This established half marathon is an annual fixture in the city’s calendar, and expects to attract around 4,000 runners, many of whom are fundraising for local and national charities. Using the city’s streets for the race will cause changes to usual traffic routes for a limited period on Sunday 18th October.

In planning the event every effort is made to minimise the disruption caused with the closing of roads.

GO2, organisers of Exeter’s Great West Run, sponsored by Tozers, are pleased to announce four-time Olympian and European 10,000 metre champion Jo Pavey, as the official race starter at Exeter’s iconic event taking place on Sunday 18 October. Born in Honiton, Devon, Jo is a familiar face on the local running scene, as a member of Exeter Harriers Athletics Club.
