Bridge lift completed ahead of schedule

A new pedestrian and cycle bridge over the M5 at Exeter has successfully been lifted into place over the weekend.

The 60-metre span Tithebarn Lane bridge was positioned alongside the existing overbridge, just north of Junction 29 of the motorway, overnight on Saturday (18 November) evening. It took 3.5 hours to fully rig the 750 tonne crane and the bridge lift started at 12:30am. The M5 was closed during the lifting operation, but re-opened three hours ahead of schedule on Sunday morning. Brave Exeter Lecturer cuts hair off for children’s charity

A Senior Lecturer at the University of Exeter Medical School, who is due to undergo chemotherapy, has cut off her long hair in aid of a children’s cancer charity close to her heart.

Dr Rachel Palfrey, 46, from Plymouth, has donated 30cms of her hair to the Little Princess Trust – a charity which provides real-hair wigs for children who have lost their hair due to the effects of chemotherapy and other illnesses.

Dr Palfrey was diagnosed with ovarian cancer in October of this year, and will be starting chemotherapy within the next few weeks.

With an estimated 6.5 million people in the UK providing unpaid care to family members and friends, Devon authorities are urging carers to take a moment, for themselves.

There are about 90,000 people providing unpaid care for loved ones and friends in Devon; more if you include Plymouth and Torbay.

Many carers don’t see themselves as ‘carers’; they feel that they’re just doing what families and friends do for each other when they need help, and they’re not going to make an issue of it.

Council owned toilet blocks have been given a new lease of life and converted into new seaside businesses.

Dawlish Warren’s outer car park is now home to the Exe Valley Cycle Hire and Veloshack Café while along the coast in Dawlish Salty Dog Kiosks has been set up on Smugglers Lane.

Enterprising businessmen seized on the commercial business opportunity to transform the buildings into new businesses after Teignbridge District Council reviewed the amount of toilets within its portfolio.

Budleigh’s new sports activity wall ready for action

Versatile £15,000 sports wall will be an asset to town thanks to S106 contributions from property developers building in Budleigh

In a joint project run between Budleigh Salterton Town Council and East Devon District Council, a brand new £15,000 sports activity wall is now in place in the town.

Over 300 people in Budleigh Salterton originally had their say on how to spend money on outdoor sports in the town a couple of years ago – their priorities were for a new outdoor gym and foot/cycle path improvements for The Green. Both of these have happened now.

Police and Crime Commissioner backs North Devon Link Road improvements

Police and Crime Commissioner Alison Hernandez has given her full backing to Devon County Council’s bid to improve the north Devon link road.

Ms Hernandez, who is joint national PCC lead on road safety alongside Martin Underhill in Dorset, says she is determined to offer whatever support she can to improve the safety of the roads in Devon and Cornwall.
