Preparing for public health homecoming

In just over two weeks, the way in which public health in Devon is delivered and organised will change significantly, as responsibility for the health of Devon’s communities is handed back to the local authority for the first time in 39 years.

The move comes as part of a number of changes to the management of the health service, introduced by the government in its bid to ‘liberate the NHS’.

Police warn homeowners to be vigilant of unscrupulous trading practices

Devon and Cornwall Police has become aware that a company has been cold calling local people and carrying out a survey, claiming to be working in collaboration with the police, where personal details are being requested from those being called. We are informed that this company sell home security alarm systems. Rainbow flag parade will be pride of celebrations

Exeter will host the largest rainbow flag parade the city has ever seen as part of the biggest lesbian, gay, bisexual and trans (LGBT) celebration in the South West.

A 50-metre-long rainbow flag will be part of the Exeter Pride parade down Exeter High Street to Exeter Phoenix on Saturday 23 March.

The Lord Mayor of Exeter, Cllr Rob Newby, will start the parade, which will gather at 12 noon and then leave the St Sidwell Centre at 1pm.

Local Police officers awarded for bravery

Superintendent Chris Eastwood; police commander for the areas of Exeter, East and Mid Devon has awarded a number of police officers for their selfless acts of bravery and diligent examples of professionalism in frontline policing.

Supt Eastwood said, “These awards recognise the excellent work that goes on across the policing area, both on the frontline and behind the scenes. Exeter City Centre Church Wins Heritage Lottery Fund Award

The Church of St Michael and All Angels on Mount Dinham, Exeter, has been awarded a £40,100 grant from the Heritage Lottery Fund (HLF) for a series of projects which will bring together cultural and environmental interests in a unique setting.

The grant from HLF will primarily go towards the cost of installing a newly restored, historic pipe organ and a webcam trained on the nest of a breeding pair of peregrine falcons high on the church’s spire.

Diocese launches multi academy trust to sponsor schools

The Department of Education has formally approved the orders to allow the first schools to join the Diocese of Exeter’s new Multi Academy Trust.

The Trust, named St Christopher’s, has been set up by the diocese to enable it to support schools which are becoming academies.

The Diocese of Exeter has 130 church schools across Devon, which educate around 22,000 children aged 4-18. The vast majority of church schools in the diocese (85 per cent) are rated by Ofsted as good or outstanding.
