A new county Chairman has been appointed for Devon’s branch of the NFU. David Verney a mixed farmer and egg producer from Bishop’s Nympton takes up family tradition by following his father and uncle into the position. “I think of it as a challenge and I wouldn’t be able to do it without having my two boys at home and a very understanding wife.

Every £1 spent on Broadband gives £20 to the UK economy

A new report has shown that every £1 invested into Broadband, brings £20 back to the UK economy.

The report commissioned for the government also reveals that the impact of superfast internet also has a huge impact on the way we live making it easier to work from home or stream online TV.

Earlier this year the first rural communities in Devon began to benefit from a rollout of superfast broadband to smaller communities.

The improvements are part of a £94 million investment in Devon and Somerset which will see 15,000 premises in the two counties’ benefit.

Plymouth woman forgot she knew photo-taking 'burglar'

A Plymouth woman who reported a burglar had taken a picture of himself on her phone has said that she knows the man in the photo.

The woman found a picture on her mobile of an unknown man sitting in her home

The woman contacted Devon and Cornwall Police believing that a burglar had left a chilling calling card.

However, in what the police have called a “genuine lapse in memory” the unnamed woman forgot that the man had been in her house and was known to her.

Kate Lamport, Queen of Style launched the first of her new ‘My Ex Wardrobe’ pop-up shops with visitors bringing once-loved clothing and accessories to buy and sell. Over 1000 pieces from well-known brands were on display at the event held at Radiance MediSpa and a charity raffle raised £200 for ‘Live Life Then Give Life’.

Councils could gain powers to ban peaceful protests on the grounds that it might annoy nearby residents through a bill currently going through Parliament.

The Home Office proposed Anti-Social Behaviour, Crime and Policing Bill is currently being read in the House of Lords having already passed through Commons.

One section of the bill proposes giving councils the power to issue Public Spaces Protection Orders (PSPO) to prevent activities that have a detrimental effect on the quality of life of those in the locality and are of a continuing or persistent nature.

Exeter City Football Club are delighted to once again be running the annual Charity Santa Dash, which takes place on Saturday 30th November. Entrants will begin their mile-long Dash (or walk, or amble) from the Guildhall promptly at 1.15pm, and make their way through the City to St James Park stadium in good time for the 3pm kick-off against Bury. All Dashers will be raising money for a range of charities close to their own hearts. Christmas lights switch on a week away!

Exeter city centre’s Christmas lights switch-on event is just a week away.

The Christmas lights ceremony, next Thursday, will see Rob Baxter, Exeter Chiefs Head Coach; Paul Tisdale, Manager of Exeter City Football Club and members of the Lympstone Military Wives Choir taking centre stage to jointly switch on the city centre’s Christmas lights at 6.30pm.

Joining them on stage will be the Lord Mayor of Exeter.

Plymouth announces date for the British Firework Championships 2014

Plymouth is again preparing to host one of the most exciting events in the UK: the internationally renowned British Firework Championships.

The dates for the 2014 event have now been confirmed as Tuesday 12 August and Wednesday 13 August.

Food Poverty Project Poised to win ‘The People’s Millions’

Local charity The Devon and Cornwall Food Association has been shortlisted as the potential recipient of up to £50,000 of People’s Millions Lottery Funding – an opportunity that will enable them to expand the vital work they do to redistribute in-date food that would otherwise be sent to landfill. Their project, Devon and Cornwall Food Action, is one of two projects chosen for the South West region but your help is now sought to secure the funding.
