Exeter chef Michael is the best in the UK

Michael Caines' restaurant at Gidleigh Park, Chagford, in Devon is the home of the UK’s best cooking.

That was the verdict of the Sunday Times which yesterday published its ‘Food List’ – the top 100 UK restaurants for food.

It is yet another feather in the cap for Michael, who studied at Exeter College.

Among those congratulating him yesterday were his former mentor Raymond Blanc.

He wrote on twitter: "Warmest congratulations to Michael Caines for being number 1. The top award for a brilliant chef, gentleman and friend."

Members of Newton St Cyres Young Farmers Club have been busy in the last few weeks with a fun filled programme of events. The members have listened to interesting talks from Tom Lee and Alice Giles (of Bow YFC) ,about their recent trip to Amsterdam with the Devon YFC Travel Programme. At the following meeting, Richard Gibson of BBC2 ‘Toughest Place to be a farmer’ gave an inspiring talk on his time in Kenya. Landmark Information Group hires eight young apprentices

Landmark Information Group, the UK’s leading provider of land and property search information, with a local office in Exeter, has appointed eight apprentices to join its 430-strong workforce.

Following an extensive interview and selection process, the apprentices will all be undertaking a 12-month Landmark apprenticeship programme designed to equip them with the skills necessary to progress in the industry. Five of the appointments were made in partnership with the apprenticeships provider QA Apprenticeships, and are designed to combine employment with government funded training....

115 years of service celebrated at the Nuffield Health Exeter Hospital

Staff at the Nuffield Health Exeter Hospital have celebrated over 100 years of continuous long service.

Nine staff members, with 115 years of service at the hospital between them, were recently given awards by Hospital Director Paul Taylor.

Fire crews called to Exeter H&M

H&M in Exeter was evacuated today after smoke was reported in the premises.

Three fire appliances from Danes Castle and Middlemoor, together with an aerial ladder platform from Danes Castle, attended the incident.

On arrival crews confirmed the shop had been evacuated and set to work investigating the source of the smoke.

The cause of the smoke was found to be a small door heater on the ground floor of the shop which was extinguished by isolating the power supply .

Crews cleared the smoke with a ventilation fan and used a short extension ladder to check...

Seagull summit 'a success'

Sidmouth was the setting for a seagull summit organised by East Devon District Council.

After the event held in the Council Chamber at Knowle, Sidmouth, summit chairman Councillor Tom Wright declared the meeting a great success.

Councillor Wright, Deputy Cabinet Member for Environment and an EDDC ward member for Budleigh Salterton, said he was pleased with the audience of 50 people in the room and was also impressed at the range of topics covered in the two and a half hour meeting.

Funding boost for NEET Families

The families of some of Exeter’s young NEETs (Not in Education, Employment or Training) are to benefit from over £24,000 sponsorship provided by the Vocational Training Charitable Trust (VTCT), a specialist awarding body offering vocational qualifications.

The money will enable eight parents and carers of Hair@theAcademy students to study a Level One Course in Hair and Beauty at the training salon based within Exeter Royal Academy for Deaf Education.
