4G arrives in Exeter before Christmas

Mobile phone network EE will bring 4G mobile broadband to Exeter before Christmas.

EE is the first mobile network to bring 4G to Exeter and will see customers get speeds up to five times faster than the current 3G network.

Lisa Perez, Regional Manager for the West Country, EE, said: “The arrival of 4G mobile in Exeter is great news for our customers. 4G from EE is like having fibre broadband to your mobile phone, and allows customers to access the content they care about without the frustration of pages being slow to load, or apps not connecting.”

Charlotte Ward celebrates Open Mic success

Exeter singer/songwriter Charlotte Ward is celebrating after reaching the national finals of the prestigious talent competition Open Mic UK.

Charlotte, 15, performed one of her original songs, Lies, taken from her first EP “Can I get a word in?” at the area heats in Fareham to win her place in the Open Mic UK Final at the NEC Birmingham in January. “I can’t believe it! Over 10,000 people entered the competition and I’m in the final 25 under-16s. It’s taking a while to sink in," she said.

Exeter City Council to pay Living Wage

Exeter City Council has announced it will begin paying its staff the ‘living wage’.

64 council staff will see their hourly pay rise to £7.65 per hour from January 1 next year.

The decision is designed to encourage businesses in Exeter to also make the move onto the higher pay standard as the council believes it will boost the local economy. Low numbers of school leavers recruited

Devon businesses are only recruiting low numbers of young people looking for their first job since leaving education, according to research published today by Devon County Council.

The Devon County Council Workforce Skills Survey aims to better understand the issues and challenges facing businesses in Devon in relation to skills, with one of these areas being recruitment.

Devon County Council’s public health team and Northern, Eastern and Western Devon Clinical Commissioning Group (NEW Devon CCG) are celebrating after winning a prestigious public relations award for their joint winter messages campaign.

The Choose Well campaign, which encourages people to keep warm and stay healthy during winter, won silver in the Public Sector Campaign category at the 2013 Chartered Institute of Public Relations South West PRide Awards.

New local Lib Dem leader

Devon County Councillor Alan Connett will take over as Leader of the Liberal Democrat group on Devon County Council from Monday 2 December.

Cllr Connett has been a member of the County Council since 2008, where he represents the Exminster and Kenton electoral division.

Former leader Councillor Des Hannon has stepped aside having been appointed to a full time role in the private sector.

Cllr Hannon will continue to represent Tiverton East and maintain his membership of council committees.

Man surrenders after firearms stand off

Police have arrested a 32 year-old man in a firearm incident after a nearly four hour long standoff in Barnstaple last night (2 December). The man was threatening to harm himself and anyone who might approach him on Castle Street from around 4.00pm Police cordoned off the area closing down the Strand and the surrounding area in Barnstaple to ensure the safety of all parties. The man surrendered after a successful police negotiation and was arrested at 7:45pm. The police would like to thank the local community for their cooperation and patience during the period the cordon was in place....
