The weather will finally begin to improve this afternoon after several days of severe gales and heavy rain.

Sunny spells and lighter winds are expected in Exeter this afternoon with a few light showers.

However the Met Office will maintain yellow weather warnings for the South West warning against further gales and heavy rain until late this evening.

The west coast could also see several heavy showers before the poor weather begins to clear by tomorrow.

Bus travel has mostly returned to normal with most routes running a full saturday service with the...

Oh What a Night!

Event Date:
28/12/2013 - 7:00pm
Venue:
Christow Village Hall

The lull between Christmas and New Year can be a trying time; attempting to be the perfect host and keeping your guests amused, whilst avoiding the looming guilt over the amount of food consumed and drink imbibed over the holidays! Luckily, Christow local Ian Goodwin has noted that this gap in the schedule could be put to much better use and has organised a superb event to fill the social calendar – whilst also raising money for Devon Air Ambulance Trust.

‘Oh What A Night!’ is being hosted at Teign Valley Community Hall in Christow on Saturday 28th December, with party-goers being...

Dreaming of a green Christmas

Whilst we are all busy thinking about presents and festive food over the coming days, Devon residents are also being asked to try and remember to recycle and re-use where ever possible.

Wrapping paper, cardboard, bottles and even christmas trees can all be recycled or taken to recycling centres. In many areas, a collection service for Christmas trees will make sure those trees are taken for chipping and composting.

Unwanted fake trees can be passed on to someone else via reuse sites such as Freegle, Freecycle or sold via Gumtree, Preloved, Amazon or Ebay or taken to your...

Central United Under 11's Earn all 3 points

In the Exeter & District youth league under 11’s division two Central United showed real grit and determination to beat a physical Kentisbeare team 2-1 on Saturday. The first half saw some very nice football despite the boggy pitch and Central United took a deserved lead through a well worked goal by Andrew Lapworth. Francis Blewett was a constant threat down the right hand side and went close on several occasions before finding the back of the net to give the United boys a 2-0 lead, which was preserved until half time due to some superb goal keeping by Ollie Banwell.

Devon residents saving thousands on oil

Members of a scheme to tackle rising energy prices have saved a staggering £23,000 off the cost of their domestic heating oil, this year.

Devon County Council says it’s a great example of communities working together to get a better deal on their heating bills.

The Devon Oil Collective works on the principle of buying heating oil in bulk through consolidating its members’ orders and placing them monthly through a dedicated broker who negotiates the best possible price on their behalf.

Typically members are obtaining oil prices 4.67 pence per litre cheaper than the...

Celebrating Exeter’s multicultural history

The education charity behind a ground-breaking multicultural history project in Exeter believes it will have a lasting legacy in the city – and says it should be rolled out at other cities across the country.

The Heritage Lottery-funded Telling Our Stories, Finding Our Roots (TOSFOR) project officially ended on 20 December but volunteers will continue to maintain the website and work with local primary and secondary schools. The charity, Devon Development Education, is also hoping that the public will carry on submitting stories to the website about people and places from Exeter’s...

£90,000 is to be spent on improvements to the skate park in Honiton after young people in East Devon voted for the project.

113 young people in the area voted for the new design for their skate park at three voting events held by East Devon District Council (EDDC). They got to vote on which one of four designs they wanted installed, the winner with 88% of all votes was Option D, a design from 1Skateparks. EDDC will now work with 1Skateparks to get this design installed and opened by early summer 2014. The £90,000 has come from EDDC’s main budget and is being spent on Honiton skate...

Preparatory work is due to start in January to widen Bridge Road in Exeter, in an attempt to improve traffic flow in and out of the city.

Bridge Road is currently a traffic congestion hotspot, suffering from tailbacks which block the Countess Wear junction and its approach routes.

Devon County Council is planning to widen Bridge Road to provide two continuous outbound lanes from Countess Wear to the Matford roundabout in order to tackle queuing and reduce journey times for all traffic, while at the same time improving pedestrian and cycle facilities.
