Neil Parish MP to chair public meeting on rural broadband

Neil Parish, MP for Tiverton and Honiton, is chairing a public meeting in Upottery on rural broadband in Devon. The meeting has been organised by Upottery Parish Council after concerns that rural areas like Upottery will not see the benefit of the Government’s rollout of superfast broadband.

Further flood fears in more heavy rain

There are fears that more severe flooding could be on the way as the Met Office upgrade many of its severe weather warnings to ‘amber’ for the rest of the week. Much of Devon and the South west will be covered by the ‘amber’ warnings and will see heavier rainfall than other areas. Forecasters predict that further spells of heavy and persistent rain will remain in Devon until a Saturday morning adding an extra strain to already saturated ground. Lotto money for Exeter Good Causes

More than £4 million of National Lottery funding was invested into Exeter last year, figures released today reveal. Across Exeter, 63 grants were awarded, providing a vital cash boost to local arts, sport and heritage and community groups helping the area’s most vulnerable people. In 2013, grants were awarded to:

  • £9,540 to Exeter City Football in the Community to purchase IT equipment, office furniture and kitchen equipment. This will enable the group to provide an enhanced learning space for children who attend the group activities.

South West Coastguard stare down storm

The Coastguard have renewed warnings against people approaching the Devon coast in the bad weather after a busy night helping to rescue those affected by the storm.

In just under three hours the rescue co-ordinators recived seven callouts including help in evacuating homes and town centres.

They now ask that people take extra care and avoid the risks of cliffs and the coastline.

'Major incident' declared in Dawlish as storms batter Devon

A major incident has been declared in Dawlish after part of the railway line was left suspended in mid air as storms battered Devon.

Twenty people were evacuated from their homes in the town, meanwhile two people were rescued from a vehicle which was trapped in floodwater about 9.20 last night.

Police have asked that people wanting to see the scene at Dawlish stay away to "allow responders to do everything possible to help local residents."

Devon and Cornwall Police took 400 999 calls last night and over 100 trees were brought down in the wild weather.

Video: Met Office forecaster explains the Storms

As the Met Office warn of five more days of severe stormy weather this week, Deputy Chief Forecaster Chris Tubbs took to youtube to explain what causes it.

Speaking from The Met Office building Exeter Chris warns that as new weather systems travel across the South West further disruption is expected.

He also cautioned that the worst storm is likely to hit on saturday and urged people to stay away from the coast as there would be big waves.

West Exe gets glowing report from Ofsted

West Exe College has received a “good” rating from education inspectors.

A team of inspectors from regulator Ofsted visited the school for two days in an announced inspection in mid-January in which they obsered lessons and met with students and staff.

In their report, inspectors praised the good progress made among all students including those with special educational needs or disabilities, commenting: “Individual students’ needs are very well understood and skilled support is quickly put in place when necessary.”
