Ecologists reveal effects of light pollution on wildlife

Light pollution is often associated with negative effects on wildlife, but research undertaken by the University of Exeter now sheds some light on the subject. Ecologists have found that by mimicking a perpetual full moon, the gas flares and electrical lighting along Scotland's Forth estuary are helping shorebirds stock up on more food during the winter to fuel their spring migration. The research – the first to use night-time light data from US military satellites to study animal behaviour – is published this week in the British Ecological Society's Journal of Animal Ecology.

Over 50 dedicated students set off for destinations across Exeter, the south west and further afield raising funds for NSPCC during the Exeter College Jailbreak 2012 last week.

Three college students are anxiously waiting to hear if they have scooped the first prize in a national photography competition set up to capture the start of the college year and organised by the national FE Week newspaper.

Around 160 Exeter College higher education students took to the streets today (26th October) as they donned their caps and gowns to process through the city for their Graduation Ceremony, held at Exeter Cathedral at 2.30pm.

£1.1 Million Lottery boost for College Sport in the SW

The students of Exeter College and indeed across the South West can look forward to improved sporting opportunities thanks to new National Lottery funding from Sport England. A total of £17 million of investment will fund ‘College Sport Maker’ roles in Further Education across the country. Within the South West, 11 of these new full time posts have been awarded.

Students at Exeter College celebrated National Poetry Day with a range of events, including a visit from performance poet Matt Harvey.

Over 130 students packed the college's Theatre at the Centre for Creative Industries on Queen Street as Mr Harvey entertained them with anecdotes and poetry.

He shared with them some of his published work from his recent anthologies "Where earwigs dare" and "The hole in the sum of my parts". Students also had an opportunity to ask him questions about his career, inspirations and techniques.

Michelin-starred chef Michael Caines has launched a new academy at Exeter College. The Michael Caines Academy, in partnership with City & Guilds, will offer places to eight trainee chefs and eight front-of-house students, aged between 16 and 19. The two-year course begins in September and students will be able to work their way up to the City & Guilds Level 3 Diplomas. They will also take part in further courses beyond the initial two years, potentially leading to a Level 4 City & Guilds qualification.
