As East Devon’s new town of Cranbrook takes shape and expansion looks set to continue for several years to come, the district council needs to ensure that it has enough staff with the right skills to deal with the many challenges that the blossoming community will pose.
But any new staff recruitment will take place against a background of shrinking resources within local government. There are hopes of up to £285,000 from the Department for Communities and Local Government, but this funding has not been confirmed, so other sources of funding will need to be found – including...
The planning application for a new, improved public slipway at Mamhead View, Exmouth, has been submitted and should be considered for approval before the end of the year.
The existing slipway had to be closed in August 2012 for public safety reasons. Surveys showed that the fill material supporting the concrete slab of the slipway had been scoured away.
Specialist consultants have been employed to examine options for a replacement slipway, and to carry out the necessary geotechnical and environmental surveys needed to support a planning application.

Plans for a 12-bed hotel with 38 units of self-catering holiday accommodation at Seaton Heights were last week given the go-ahead by EDDC.

A revised plan was submitted, showing a two-metre wide ‘bat corridor’ on the site, which satisfied the requirements of Natural England.
The two-storey hotel building and holiday units, with a central amenities building housing a restaurant and leisure club, plus car parking...
East Devon District Council (EDDC) housing officers and cleansing operatives moved in this week to clean up a flat vacated by a tenant after a court granted the council possession of the premises.

EDDC applied to the courts in March this year for a possession order to take back the flat in Cheshire Road, Withycome Raleigh. The order was granted, but the tenant was...
A major new study has been published looking at the possibility of developing a walking, cycling and riding route from Sidmouth to Feniton.

The study has follows a community meeting last year which highlighted the need for the report as part of the legacy work of the construction of Coleridge Bridge in Ottery St Mary, which opened to the public in August 2011. The feasibility study found...
