As East Devon’s new town of Cranbrook takes shape and expansion looks set to continue for several years to come, the district council needs to ensure that it has enough staff with the right skills to deal with the many challenges that the blossoming community will pose.

But any new staff recruitment will take place against a background of shrinking resources within local government. New Mamhead Slipway moves a step closer

The planning application for a new, improved public slipway at Mamhead View, Exmouth, has been submitted and should be considered for approval before the end of the year.

The existing slipway had to be closed in August 2012 for public safety reasons. Surveys showed that the fill material supporting the concrete slab of the slipway had been scoured away.

Specialist consultants have been employed to examine options for a replacement slipway, and to carry out the necessary geotechnical and environmental surveys needed to support a planning application.

Third East Devon tenant evicted

East Devon District Council has evicted a third tenant from council-owned flat due to anti social behaviour.

The council had recently evicted two other tenants from flats in Exmouth and Budleigh Salterton due to repeated incidents of anti social behaviour

The tenat from Budleigh Salteron was evicted earlier this week while a court granted EDDC an eviction order for the Exmouth property in April.

Now EDDC has evicted a tenant from a flat at 8 Powell Close, Seaton, where one of the issues was repeated anti social behaviour.

Man dies in Devon tractor accident

A man died when his tractor overturned after leaving a field.

Police, fire and ambulance services were called to the scene at Northmostown near Sidmouth yesterday afternoon (Monday May 19).

The tractor had been towing a trailer when it overturned just before 12:50pm. The male driver was trapped and despite the efforts of emergency crews died at the scene.

His next of kin have been informed.

New Measures designed to help home and business owners protect their properties from future flood events were approved by East Devon District Council’s (EDDC) Cabinet meeting this week.

Equipment for a wide range of activities is now available free of charge near Honiton following a successful bid by the town council. The bid for £12,500 funded a series of ‘boxes’ containing kit for a wide range of activities, such as the film-making and screening ‘box’, including items like camcorders, laptops, microphones, projector and tripods. Seaton Hotel gets go-ahead after bat corridor promise

Plans for a 12-bed hotel with 38 units of self-catering holiday accommodation at Seaton Heights were last week given the go-ahead by EDDC.

The proposal was initially refused because of objections from Natural England who were concerned about potential interference with bat movements in the area.

East Devon District Council (EDDC) housing officers and cleansing operatives moved in this week to clean up a flat vacated by a tenant after a court granted the council possession of the premises.

A major new study has been published looking at the possibility of developing a walking, cycling and riding route from Sidmouth to Feniton.

The concept of the 16km multi-use route, known informally as the Otter Trail, has been around for many years but has now been explored in more detail by the sustainable travel charity Sustrans. The Mayor of Exmouth, Cllr John Humphreys is to ‘break the ground’ as work starts on the new £5m Premier Inn for Exmouth next Tuesday.
