Professor Roy Sambles has taken up his position as the new president of the Institute of Physics (IOP).
Professor Sambles, from the University of Exeter’s Physics and Astronomy department, succeeds Dr Frances Saunders in the prestigious role and will serve as president for two years. He has served as president-elect since October 2013, having been chosen by the IoP’s Council.

Devon County Council is investing £150,000 to improve the surface of roads in Broadhembury and Chardstock.
Work on the A373 Colliton Cross to Broadleaze, Broadhembury, is due to start on Monday 26 October. The road will be fully closed, 24 hours a day, until Saturday 31 October. During the closure, traffic will be diverted via the B3181 and A30.
The A358 Chard Road at Chardstock will be resurfaced from Monday 9 November.

Police are appealing for witnesses after a man was stabbed outside a Devon nightclub at the weekend.
The man in his 30s, from Plymouth, suffered multiple stab wounds as a result of a disorder outside the Crash Manor on Union Street in Plymouth at 5.30am on Sunday 4 October.
He was taken to Derriford Hospital with superficial stab wounds and discharged later following medical treatment.
A 16-year-old boy from Plymouth has been arrested on suspicion of assault causing grievous bodily harm. He remains in Charles Cross police station for questioning.

Exeter School was delighted to welcome Dr Natalie Garrett to Exeter School on 28 September to give two talks on her work as a Biophotonics researcher at the University of Exeter.
