Exeter supports Social Saturday

Social enterprises in Exeter are being celebrated at the weekend as part of a nationwide initiative - Social Saturday.

Saturday (10 October) marks a UK-wide day of activity to celebrate, raise awareness and buy from social enterprises.

What sets these businesses aside from traditional businesses is that they trade for a social or an environmental purpose. They reinvest or donate their profits to meet this purpose.

Dairy farmers still struggling with prices

Farmers’ leaders in the South West are predicting more tough times ahead for the region’s dairy industry.

The recent announcement of further cuts means farm gate milk prices are likely to remain below the cost of production for some time to come, putting many farming families under increased pressure.

In the South West this is exacerbated by having to deal with the financial and emotional effects of bovine TB. According to figures published by industry body AHDB Dairy, 124 farmers from the region have left dairying over the last year, a stark illustration of the problems...

Exeter Dementia Action Alliance to officially launch next month

The Exeter Dementia Action Alliance will be officially launching next month at the Royal Albert Memorial Museum with over 100 due to attende from local councillors to city retailers, businesses, people living with dementia and their care givers.

RAMM Community Participation Officer said: “RAMM is proud to be part of the Alliance, this growing community of organisations working towards a dementia-friendly city. At the museum there’s always something to discover – about objects, about the world, about yourself, or the person with you. We value every visitor.”

Baby rescued from locked garage

A three-month-old baby was rescued from a locked garage in Newton Abbot today.

Firefighters from Newton Abbot were sent to the garage in Jetty Marsh Road just after 11am, following a call reporting a car with a baby inside, which had been accidently locked in a garage.

Crews rescued the baby girl by gaining access to the garage via a ground floor window and used small tools to gain entry to the vehicle.

The baby was reunited her mother, uninjured.

Devon solicitor takes command on stage

A partner of Honiton-based law firm Beviss & Beckingsale is preparing to assume command on stage, playing the Major General in a new production of “The Pirates of Penzance” starting in Exeter this week.

Solicitor Mark Ollier, who lives in Exeter, is reprising the role he’s played twice before, in Seaton for the Testudo Players and in Sidmouth for the town’s Arts Club Operatic Society.

Teignbridge launches recycling rewards

Community organisations and residents who pledge to recycle and reduce food waste are in with a chance of winning prizes in a new initiative launched by Teignbridge District Council.

Teignbridge, which is rolling out its new waste and recycling service, has unveiled a Recycling Together Rewards scheme aimed at rewarding those who support recycling with cash prizes and drive up recycling rates even higher.

The scheme is supported by £40,000 from the Department for Communities and Local Government and is part of Teignbridge’s new bin and recycling collection service which...

Fire crews tackle barn blaze

Fire crews were called to a barn fire in East Devon earlier today (Monday 5 October).

Fire Control mobilised appliances from Seaton, Colyton, Axminster and the water carrier from Exeter to reports of a fire within a barn at a farm near Musbury.

On arrival crews found one building measuring 120m x 20m containing straw and livestock, efforts were made to remove straw and farm vehicles.

Three hose reel jets, a thermal imaging camera, drag forks and two breathing apparatus were in use.

The cause of the fire was believed to be accidental.
