Exeter’s Welcome Team expands

Exeter's Business Improvement District has expanded its Welcome Team with the appointment of Paul Merrell. He joins Darren and Myra in assisting visitors, monitoring the city environment and working with the businesses across the BID area.

With nearly 17 years’ experience as an energy efficiency surveyor, Paul has picked up a range of skills to bring to the team including management and sales. An excellent communicator, he wanted a people-focused role after being self-employed for a number of years.

East Devon beach huts prove popular

Following consultation in spring 2015, which resulted in changes to the management of council owned beach huts, East Devon District Council is delighted to report that public demand for beach huts for the 2016 season is as strong as ever, to the point that there is now limited availability.

Initially, 24% of beach hut/beach hut sites/chalet tenants relinquished their rentals as a result of the agreed changes, which included:

  • An increase in the rental charges for beach huts, beach hut sites and chalets for 2016/2017 and 2017/2018

A new style of Women's Rugby Academy is being launched by Exeter College, in partnership with Exeter Chiefs, for students starting this autumn.

Students will benefit from first-class rugby and sports coaching, together with outstanding training and education opportunities.

Cracking weekend at The Shops at Dartington Food fair

This wonderfully sunny weekend (29th – 30th May) saw The Shops at Dartington’s annual Food Fair back for its sixth year, and what a brilliant bank holiday weekend it was. Attracting a record breaking crowd, over 7,000 visitors flocked to the popular shopping destination near Totnes. Throughout the two days visitors were treated to the county’s fabulous food and drink producers and the opportunity to watch mouth-wateringly good workshops from Devon’s food and drink stars.

County’s first recovery café opens in Exeter

A NEW café has opened to offer an informal, supportive place to go for people around Exeter experiencing issues with alcohol or drugs. The Exeter Recovery Café was officially opened by CEO of System Six Kitchens Ian Foster, who supplied the café kitchen, tables and chairs as a competition prize, with Deputy Mayor Cllr Peter Holland. It is the first permanent recovery café in Devon. Community Transport Award winners honoured

A record number of nominations were received for this year’s Devon Community Transport Awards and the winners were announced at a special ceremony on Thursday 26 May.

More than 80 nominations were received for this year’s awards, which are now in their 17th year and aim to recognise outstanding contributions to community transport in Devon.

The Devon Community Transport Awards, sponsored by the GM Coachwork Group, who specialise in wheelchair access vehicles and vehicle adaptations, honoured 10 proud recipients at the celebration event at County Hall.

Music, song and dance at Dartmoor Folk Festival

TOP local and national artists will headline at the 39th Dartmoor Folk Festival, which will be held at South Zeal, near Okehampton, on August 5, 6 and 7.

They include Blazin' Fiddles, Miranda Sykes and Rex Preston, Bob Fox, Mawkin, Talisk, Pete Coe, Alice Jones and Tickled Pink with Fee Lock.

Films chart Cranbrook's development

A trilogy of short films, commissioned by East Devon District Council, charting the development of Cranbrook have been released.

The films capture three of the major milestones reached by the East Devon new town at the second half of last year. The films document the first shop opening, the first all-through school (first secondary school / second primary school) opened and the start of the train service.

Cranbrook is about to approach its fifth birthday, as the town was born when the first turf was cut on 29 June 2011.
