Devon receives national investment to help older people get active in nature

Devon’s Local Nature Partnership has been awarded £500,000 of National Lottery funding from Sport England to deliver a new and exciting five year programme that will support older people in Devon and Torbay to connect actively to nature.

The ‘Connecting Actively to Nature (CAN)’ programme will help over 3,000 inactive people to discover the combined benefits of a more active lifestyle with the psychological benefits that being outdoors in nature brings.

Car park charges help conservation in Dartmoor National Park

At its meeting on 6 October 2017 Dartmoor National Park Authority made the decision to implement charges for vehicle parking at Haytor, Postbridge, Meldon Reservoir and Newbridge car parks.

The decision follows a period of public consultation and Members of the Authority considered the feedback from this prior to making their decision.

Devon apprentices and graduate to keep local people safe and warm

Seven young people from Devon have started their training programmes with Wales & West Utilities as the company continues to work hard to keep the gas flowing to homes and businesses while preparing to meet future challenges.

The new recruits, Jordan Rundle, Luke Hathaway, Robert Hook, Niall Bradley, Louis Allan, earned places on the company’s highly regarded apprenticeship whilst Henry James has started the company’s graduate programme. All will now train to support the work it does to keep communities across Wales and the south west of England safe and warm.

As a massive fan of the 1987 classic film Dirty Dancing, featuring Patrick Swayze and Jennifer Grey, I was thrilled to be asked to attend A Night of Dirty Dancing – The Ultimate Tribute Show, at the Exmouth Pavilion on Friday 6th October.

Knightshayes appeal for local memories of Joyce, Lady Heathcoat Amory

A project is underway at Knightshayes as part of an effort to create an archive of recorded memories from people who met and knew Joyce, Lady Heathcoat Amory. The team at Knightshayes are on a hunt to find anyone who might have known Joyce, visited her, met her, played golf with her or have any memories they’d like to share. The project will run alongside a larger project next year to celebrate Joyce and share stories about her life. Hospice is 'the happiest place I've ever worked'

Judith Harris-Deans from Exeter has been volunteering for local charity Hospiscare for the last six years, and describes it as “the happiest place I’ve ever worked.” Since 2012 Judith has been popping into Searle House in Exeter to support the fundraising team with donations administration.

Judith described her typical day: “I usually come in once a week, but it’s a flexible arrangement so if I can’t make it in it’s never a problem, I just let them know beforehand. Likewise, sometimes I will come in much more often during busy times, like Christmas, when the team needs extra help....

Exeter and Teignbridge councils are stepping up their homelessness support with a new campaign aimed at highlighting all the good work that goes on in the area and raising awareness of the issue.
