Prize-winning pigeons bring plumage and personality to Devon County Show

Anyone who fancies they know what a pigeon looks like should be prepared to have their minds and eyes boggled at the Devon County Show this May.

Over 350 of the UK’s most unusual-looking ‘fancy’ pigeons will be gathering at the Show, taking place at the Devon County Showground, Westpoint, from May 16 to 18.

The Show’s Pigeon Secretary, Adrian Down, said: ‘People think it means just a normal pigeon you get off the street but these are far prettier. We’ve got breeders coming from all over the country bringing their best examples of some of the finest fancy pigeons in the land...

Devon’s famous Lucombe Oak among 100 new trees to mark the Forestry Commission’s centenary year at the showground in May.

The Forestry Commission is providing100 new trees at Westpoint Showground, home of the Devon County Show, as part of its centenary year celebrations.

A commemorative Lucombe Oak, an evergreen hybrid discovered by Exeter nurseryman William Lucombe in the late 18th century, will be the centrepiece among the new trees being donated by the Forestry Commission. The Devon Cattle Breeders Society National Show

This year, the Devon Cattle Breeders Society returns to its native county to host its national show at Devon County Show 2019. The Devon Ruby, a beautiful breed with its signature deep, rich, burnished red coat is internationally recognised for its ability to produce the very finest marbled beef on a low maintenance diet. The Show is expecting up to 100 Devon Reds on site competing in the show, along with a new young stars competition dedicated to young handlers.

The Devon County Show has announced that it is to introduce a new section to the Craft & Garden feature for 2019 which will enable small businesses operating in horticulture to benefit, for the first time ever, from the 91k strong audience that visit the show over three days in May.

Food lovers all over the county will welcome the news that Devon County Show is to increase its food offering to make it an even more mouth-watering experience for 2019.

Aside from the ever popular Food & Drink Pavilion dedicated to West Country food producers, there will be a new Food Walk at show which will be open to national and international food producers. This will be located on Avenue B, alongside the Taste of the West.

Devon County Show has been voted the best event in Devon, according to readers of the Primary Times, a publication aimed at parents of 4-11 years olds and distributed via Devon primary schools. An on-line survey, which appeared on the Primary Times website over a five week period, invited readers to cite their favourite family-friendly places and people across Devon in various categories. Jacqui Lanning, of Devonshire Poultry, has been named ‘Farmer of the Year’ in the Devon Farm Business Awards, organised by the Addington Fund, the Devon County Agricultural Association (DCAA) and leading regional solicitors Stephens Scown at the awards ceremony held on May 16.

She is the first woman to have been crowned Farmer of the Year since the awards were launched five years ago and also took home the award for Devon’s Best Woman in Farming.
