Devon County Show’s poppy appeal reaches target

Devon County Show’s appeal for hand-made poppies has reached its 11,000 target more than two months early thanks to the support of creative, local people.

The appeal was launched in October with a target of collecting the red poppies in time for this year’s Show on May 18-20 at Westpoint, Exeter.

‘Devon Remembers’ will be a tribute staged at the Show to the men and women from the county who lost their lives in the First World War.

The hand-crafted poppies will be put together to form a poignant memorial in the crafts and gardens pavilion.

Tickets for the Devon County Show - one of the South West’s most iconic and enduring annual events – have gone on sale. The 122nd Show will be held on May 18-20 at Westpoint, Exeter and tickets can be purchased online or from outlets around the county. Her Royal Highness The Countess of Wessex has been elected as President of the Devon County Agricultural Association (DCAA) for 2017.

As the centenary of the First World War continues, the Craft and Garden Marquee at Devon County Show 2017 is creating a carpet of handmade poppies as a tribute to the 11,000 Devon men and women who lost their lives in the First World War.

We would like your help to achieve this project.

The hand crafted poppies can be knitted, crocheted, made from lace, felt, wood – anything other than paper.

Devon introduces jobs freeze to cut costs

A jobs freeze is being introduced by Devon County Council to manage a projected budget overspend.

The latest estimates show the budget will overspend by £8.1 million by the end of the financial year unless firm action is taken.

The jobs freeze will not apply to posts where the council would fail to meet its statutory responsibilities if it did not recruit a replacement worker.

In addition, no temporary or agency staff or consultants – apart from front-line social workers – will be taken on without the personal authorisation of chief executive, Phil Norrey.

The Devon County Agricultural Association (DCAA), organisers of the Devon County Show and Westpoint Arena, today announced the election of John Lee OBE FRAgS as its Chairman of the Board of Management.

Mr Lee has been involved with the County Show for many years as a steward, chief steward and previously held the position of chairman for seven years.

Show visitors name favourite farming and food businesses

Visitors to this year’s Devon County Show have named the local farming and food and drink businesses that they love. A survey carried out by rural solicitors Stephens Scown LLP at the show asked 480 visitors about their favourite food and drink brand, farm shop and farm attraction, as well as asking what people enjoyed most about the region. The weather may have been dodgy, the economic outlook uncertain and farming in dire straits, but none of that stopped over 90,000 visitors enjoying the gigantic three day celebration of farming, food and rural life which is the Devon County Show.

Not even showery rain on Saturday could keep the crowds away or spoil the fun. Trade stand holders reported brisk business, with the huge Food and Drink Marquee packed to the tent flaps with a legion of fine food fanciers, enjoying the very best that Devon food and drink producers have to offer.

Ideal show-going weather, great crowds and excellent competitions combined to make the second day of the Devon County Show at Westpoint, Exeter a great celebration of rural life.

Show Secretary Ollie Allen said it was wonderful to see the county turn out in force for the 121st Show: “The atmosphere is relaxed and friendly and everyone seems so happy to be enjoying the start of summer here at the show ground.”

The crowds have enjoyed exceptional local food and drink and lots of entertainment in the avenues with Titan the comic robot, bands and dancers.

Thundering-hooved Shetland ponies, motorcycle acrobatics and the giant Devon Eye swung the county’s largest annual event into thrilling action.

Crowds turned out in their thousands to savour the best of the South West’s food and farming on the first day of the Devon County Show.
