Revised schedule for Dartmoor rail service on Sunday

Rail services on the Okehampton Sunday Dartmoor Service will be running with a re-timed schedule this weekend (Sunday 11 June).

This is due to ongoing track speed restrictions between Coleford Junction and Okehampton.

The Summer Sunday Services, which are run by Great Western Railway (GWR) and funded by Devon County Council, will start and terminate at Exeter St Davids rather than Exeter Central.

Although the departure times are similar to the usual service, journeys will take around 15 minutes longer. Timings will be -

WH Smith Exeter staff and customers to walk 30 miles for mental health

Staff and customers of WH Smith Exeter store are set to trek across Dartmoor, completing 30miles over 2 days on 10th/11th June 2017 in aid of mental health charity Mind.

Richard Boyter, 33, who works for WHSmith in Exeter, is walking with staff and customers to raise £1000 by trekking across Dartmoor.

Starting at Fingle Bridge with the Finish at Bovey Castle. Richard has been inspired by the company's 225 fundraising campaign but this has become a more personal challenge after experiencing issues with his own mental health in the past year.

THERE will be a celebratory feel when the 40th anniversary Dartmoor Folk Festival takes place in the foothills of Dartmoor at South Zeal, near Okehampton, from Friday to Sunday, August 11, 12 and 13.

It was 40 years ago that the festival was founded by the late Bob Cann, who lived in the parish of South Zeal. He had the dream of a folk event on his doorstep that would help to revive and preserve the music, song and dance traditions of Dartmoor.

Moor Otters auction now live

After an extremely successful launch at Bovey Castle last week, the Moor Otters can now be bid for online.

Bidding for all 100 Moor Otters opened on 1 June 2017.

Thirty of these, nicknamed the ‘Golden Otters’, will go on to a live auction hosted by Bearnes Hampton Littlewood on 30 September ’17, taking bids from the results of the online auction.

Dartmoor National Park hopes that auctioning off the 100 colourful Otters will raise invaluable funds for conservation and developing the work of the organisation across the vast National Park.

Thousands of young people will set off on the 2017 Ten Tors challenge this weekend, spending two days in small self-sufficient teams walking through some of the most stunning scenery Dartmoor has to offer.

Alongside the Ten Tors Challenge, hundreds of young people with special needs will take part in the Jubilee Challenge.

Participants enter the Challenge as a member of a team or as an individual. Just like the Ten Tors Challenge, they are required to trek and navigate across northern Dartmoor to specified checkpoints.
