Dartmoor farmers work to benefit wildlife

A group of Dartmoor farmers have signed up to a new scheme to benefit wildlife in three Dartmoor river catchment areas.

So far 34 farmers in the East Dart, Upper Tavy and Cherry Brook/Lower West Dart catchments have signed up to work together to improve the natural environment at a landscape scale, to achieve greater improvements collectively than individual holdings may achieve on their own. A second scheme based around the Erme/ Yealm catchments is also being funded.

Recent research proves engaging with National Parks improves mental and physical wellbeing. Evidence has been published in light of action research carried out in two linked 3-year long projects by Dartmoor and Exmoor National Park Authorities.

A book that tells the story of Dartmoor, as seen through the eyes of eighteenth and nineteenth century artists, has recently been published. Researched and written by Peter F. Mason, Dartmoor, a Wild and Wondrous Region – the Portrayal of Dartmoor in Art, 1750 - 1920, accompanies the exhibition of the same name running at the Royal Albert Memorial Museum (RAMM) Exeter until 1 April 2018.

Villagers on Dartmoor have received a postcard from the past, and an invitation inspired by First World War gift parcels. Moor than meets the eye at Princetown Visitor Centre

A new exhibition by the Heritage Lottery funded Moor than meets the eye scheme is currently on display at the Dartmoor National Park Visitor Centre, Princetown.

The exhibition features some of the twenty-eight heritage projects that make up the scheme, including those run by local communities who have been telling the Dartmoor Story from a parish perspective.

Restoring the Ten Commandments Stones monument, excavating a ‘lost’ medieval manor, protecting bats in the Bovey Valley and investigating a post-medieval farmstead are just some of the projects featured.

Whitehorse Hill excavation nominated for award

A dig which unearthed the remains of a Bronze Age burial on Dartmoor in 2011 has been nominated for a prestigious archaeology award.

The discovery of a unique collection of Bronze Age grave goods on Whitehorse Hill was made by archaeologists working for Dartmoor National Park Authority on Wednesday 10 August 2011 while excavating a prehistoric burial situated at over 600 metres above sea level on Dartmoor.

Dartmoor riding stables wins prestigious tourism award

Hard work, dedication, wonderful horses and spectacular scenery have earned Babeny Farm Stables in Dartmoor a prestigious award at the Herald Express South Devon and English Riviera Tourism and Hospitality Awards.

Proprietor Dee Dee Wilkinson was presented with a Silver in the Tourism Event or Sporting Activity category at the ceremony which was held at the Riviera International Conference Centre last week.
