Trust takes part in military challenge

Staff from Northern Devon Healthcare NHS Trust (NDHT) recently took part in the South West NHS Military Challenge, organised by army reserves from 243 Field Hospital, with support from reserve units across the South West and Wessex Reserve Forces’ and Cadets’ Association.

More than 160 people went to the event from 16 NHS hospitals across the South West. It took place over the course of a weekend at Okehampton Camp on Dartmoor.

New bracken control breakthrough demonstrated on Dartmoor

The steep hillsides in the uplands of the UK present access problems when it comes to the control of one particularly difficult to manage plant – bracken. The difficulties associated with operating on steep bracken infested land, particularly for the management of livestock, and the difficulties faced by walkers and other land users increase significantly as it spreads. Bracken spread also causes significant problems for the preservation of important archaeological sites.

The unique Dartmoor Life in the First World War Exhibition is being displayed again from 18 to 24 August in Princetown to celebrate the prestigious award for the best exhibition in Britain and Ireland. Record crowds attend Dartmoor Folk Festival

RECORD crowds attended the 39th Dartmoor Folk Festival, held in the foothills of Dartmoor at South Zeal, near Okehampton from August 5 to 7.

Local and national artists entertained those who went along to the event, most to sell-out audiences.

The festival included concerts, dances, a Dartmoor Fayre, a ceilidh, folk service, craft displays, music hall, pub sessions, a ramble on Dartmoor and music, song and dance workshops.

The packed programme of events also included a dedicated children’s festival.

Haytor's Tour of Britain climb 'will be one of the toughest'

The summit stage finish at Haytor will be one of the toughest three hill-climbs in this year’s Tour of Britain says race director Mick Bennett.

And the Devon stage's victor could crucially point the way to who wins the overall race.

This year’s Stage Six of Tour of Britain starts in Sidmouth and ends in Haytor, taking in communities including Ottery St Mary, Honiton, Willand, Tiverton, Crediton, Moretonhampstead, Chudleigh and Bovey Tracey.

Hundreds march on the moors

Changes to Bridge Road to be introduced

The left turn from Bridge Road into Countess Wear Road will be permanently closed from Thursday (14 July).

The change in access to the road is part of Devon County Council’s Bridge Road improvements, and is being introduced ahead of work starting on the new Countess Wear foot and cycle bridge

In the short term the new arrangements will be imposed with barriers and cones but, longer term, the junction will be reconstructed to prevent vehicles turning left off Bridge Road, which will allow more space for pedestrians and cyclists.

Public urged not to approach escaped lynx

Police are reminding members of the public not to approach the lynx which escaped from Dartmoor Zoological Park last week, nor to be tempted to look for it on the moor.

A police spokesperson said: “Following several credible sightings of the lynx since it escaped, park staff are confident enough to put into place a humane capture plan concentrating on one area of Dartmoor.

“Any activity in this area, such as trying to get photographs, runs the risk of alarming the animal and possibly making it move on and thus making it harder to find. There is also a small risk that if...
